Bread has served as a plate for as long as it has been baked flat — the medieval trencher was a stale slab that soaked up the meal and was given away after. The enclosed sandwich took its English name in the 1760s from the Earl of Sandwich, but the practical idea, food held in bread so the hands stay clean, was never anyone’s invention.
