Soft Drinks
Sweetened, flavored water is old — the Arabic sharbat, chilled with snow and scented with fruit, reached Europe as sherbet — but the modern soft drink needed carbonation, which Joseph Priestley worked out how to produce artificially in 1767. Nineteenth-century pharmacies sold the result as a tonic, and the flavoring outlived the medicine.
