Kostenki on the Don

Kostenki is better understood as an archaeological landscape than as a single settlement. Around the villages of Kostenki and Borshchevo, ravines entering the west bank of the Don exposed a succession of buried Upper Paleolithic occupations. Windblown sediment, slope deposits, ancient soils and volcanic ash separated many episodes, preserving evidence that different groups returned to this favorable river corridor over thousands of years. The oldest widely accepted Upper Paleolithic layers may reach approximately 45,000–41,000 calibrated years before present, while other occupations continued well beyond the interval emphasized by this card.

Animal remains provide the clearest evidence for food procurement. Concentrations of horse bones at Kostenki 14 and 15 include articulated elements, extensive fragmentation and, at Kostenki 14, cut marks consistent with carcass dismemberment. At Kostenki 12, horse and reindeer remains may also represent kill-and-butchery activity, while a partial mammoth skeleton from Kostenki 1 bears evidence of processing. These discoveries show that some locations served not merely as residential areas but as places where large animals were reduced and useful portions prepared for transport or consumption. They do not prove that mammoth was a routine staple across Kostenki: the relationship between mammoth carcasses, collected bones and human diet varies by site and remains debated.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope measurements from Kostenki human remains indicate substantial reliance on terrestrial animal protein. Reindeer, horse and bison are defensible regional candidates. One Kostenki 1 individual has unusually high nitrogen values, once interpreted as evidence for considerable freshwater food consumption, but inadequate local animal baselines make that conclusion uncertain. Fish from the Don remains possible rather than demonstrated as a major dietary component.

Kostenki also challenges an exclusively meat-centered picture of Ice Age food. At Kostenki 16, use-wear and starch residues on a multifunctional stone tool indicate the pounding or grinding of wild plants around 30,000 years ago. The residues support plant processing and possible flour production, although most plants cannot be identified securely and no finished bread or porridge survives. Fireplaces, charcoal and burnt bone document fire use, but exact cooking methods—roasting, simmering in perishable containers or other techniques—cannot normally be distinguished.

Later occupations included circular mammoth-bone features, notably a structure at Kostenki 11 dated to about 25,000 calibrated years ago. Often called dwellings, these features may also have served storage, working or ceremonial purposes. Kostenki’s lasting importance lies not in a direct ancestral recipe but in its unusually detailed evidence for flexible food economies: large-game butchery, possible river foods and labor-intensive processing of wild plants all formed part of human adaptation to the cold East European Plain.

Historical context

Mobile Homo sapiens communities occupied much of Eurasia, but agriculture, pottery and permanent towns did not yet exist. The Kostenki occupations spanned major climatic oscillations and the approach to the Last Glacial Maximum. Around 39,000 calibrated years ago, ash from the Campanian Ignimbrite eruption near modern Naples traveled more than 2,000 kilometers to the Don region, leaving an important chronological marker among the archaeological layers. Kostenki’s river terraces stood within changing steppe, tundra and patchy woodland environments inhabited by horse, reindeer, bison, mammoth, Arctic fox and other cold-adapted animals.

Archaeological

StrongNumerous stratified open-air sites preserve cultural layers, lithic artifacts, hearth-related remains, pits, burials and mammoth-bone features.

Zooarchaeological

StrongHorse concentrations with articulated elements and cut-marked or fragmented bones, along with reindeer and mammoth remains, directly support carcass-processing activity at several Kostenki sites.

Residue chemical

StrongMicroscopic starch residues combined with use-wear on a tool from Kostenki 16 directly support the processing of starchy wild plants, although most source species remain uncertain.

Food identification

ModerateHorse and reindeer are securely identified in faunal assemblages, but the dietary role of mammoth and freshwater fish is less certain. Kostenki 16 starches establish plant processing without permitting a complete species list.

Dating

ModerateRadiocarbon dating, stratigraphy, paleoclimate correlations and Campanian Ignimbrite tephra constrain many occupations, but old radiocarbon measurements, redeposition and differences between BP, calibrated BP and BCE complicate a single date range for the entire complex.

Preparation method

LimitedCut marks and bone concentrations demonstrate butchery, while use-wear and starch show pounding or grinding. Specific cooking methods and completed dishes are not directly preserved.

Geographic attribution

StrongThe archaeological complex is securely located around Kostenki and Borshchevo on the west bank of the Don River in present-day Voronezh Oblast.

Historical interpretation

ModerateRepeated occupation and diverse subsistence activities are well supported, but the duration, seasonality and function of individual sites and mammoth-bone circles remain subjects of interpretation.
