Its legal status varies internationally because coca contains cocaine alkaloids, although an infusion differs greatly from purified cocaine. The defensible historical connection lies in the enduring value of the leaf and its movement across Andean landscapes—not in claiming that the modern cup reproduces a documented beverage from exactly 1000 BCE.
