Drying solved an important food-system problem. Similar noodle and paste foods existed elsewhere long before 1154, so the passage is evidence for manufacture and trade rather than a universal pasta origin story.
Modern dried pasta preserves the central logic visible at Trabia: flour transformed into a durable, transportable staple. Mechanized extrusion, controlled drying, standardized durum semolina, and industrial packaging later increased consistency and scale. Yet the medieval combination of grain, shaping, dehydration, and commerce remains recognizable in pasta sold worldwide today.

Historical context
