Reconstruction
Between 2600 and 2200 BCE, people gathering at Caral would have entered a carefully planned landscape of platform mounds, open squares, and sunken circular courts. These spaces and nearby elite residences strongly support ceremonial and administrative activity. Yet the “monument-plaza feast” is not an excavated event with a sealed banquet deposit. It is a scholarly reconstruction: public ceremonies are well supported, while a particular crowd, menu, date, and act of redistribution remain unobserved. Food remains occur in domestic and public buildings, and official Caral interpretations describe anchovy as both everyday and festive fare, but such distribution does not by itself prove mass commensality in a plaza.
The foods available make the reconstruction concrete. Caral yielded abundant anchoveta and sardines brought roughly 26 kilometers inland from the Pacific, along with clams and mussels. Irrigated fields and orchards supplied beans, squash, sweet potato, arrowroot, guava, lucuma, and pacay. Cotton was not dinner, but it was crucial: coastal fishers needed cotton fiber for nets, linking inland farming to maritime protein. Bottle gourds furnished light containers for carrying, storing, and serving food in this preceramic society.
Preparation is less visible than ingredients. Small oily fish were well suited to drying, which would have eased transport up the valley; they may also have been roasted or combined with cultivated foods. Beans and tubers required cooking, but no cooking installation has been securely tied to a plaza feast. Maize should not dominate the scene. Early reports found none at Caral, whereas later dental-calculus and limited plant evidence indicate consumption by about 2300 BCE. Isotopic results suggest that maize remained marginal there compared with C3 crops.
A plausible occasion would have joined ritual performance with the practical politics of assembling labor. Monumental buildings were repeatedly enlarged, an undertaking requiring coordinated workers, food producers, fishers, and carriers. Sharing marine and valley foods could have affirmed cooperation between communities occupying different ecological zones. Restricted rooms atop mounds and larger courts below also suggest differentiated participation, although archaeologists cannot identify hosts, guests, portions, or rules of service. Claims of centralized redistribution therefore go beyond the direct evidence.
The significance of the reconstructed meal lies not in a lost recipe but in Caral’s food system. Irrigation, cotton, fishing technology, and exchange allowed desert-valley settlements to draw on one of the world’s richest marine environments while sustaining monumental construction. Anchoveta, beans, sweet potatoes, squash, and fruit remain recognizable Peruvian foods today, but no direct continuity can be demonstrated between a specific Caral ceremony and any modern festival.
Historical context
Caral stood about 26 kilometers inland in an arid valley connected economically to Pacific fishing communities. Approximately 25 settlements with monumental architecture occupied the first 50 kilometers of the Supe Valley and coast. Their inhabitants built large stone-and-earth monuments without pottery, metal tools, or loom-woven cloth, while irrigation supported crops and cotton for fishing nets. Across the Atlantic, Egypt’s Old Kingdom was constructing its great pyramids; Mesopotamian city-states and, after about 2334 BCE, the Akkadian Empire dominated parts of Southwest Asia; and the Indus civilization was entering its mature urban phase. These were independent developments, with no evidence of contact between Caral and the Old World.
