Reconstruction
Known in Bengali as Chhiattor-er Monnontor, the famine of Bengali year 1176, this catastrophe began with failed or deficient rains and a severe drought in 1769. Bengal’s riverine economy was productive but heavily dependent on rice harvests and the timing of the monsoon. When crops failed, the price of the principal staple rose beyond the reach of laborers, small cultivators, artisans, and others whose incomes or payments were tied to agricultural work.
In ordinary years, rice anchored the rural diet. Late-eighteenth-century evidence also records split peas and salt as basic provisions, while rice was processed into muri, or puffed rice, chira, or flattened rice, and mudki, parched paddy coated with treacle. During the famine, rice for meals, seed, and processed foods became scarce. Some charitable distributions supplied rice, notably around Murshidabad, and elite Indian patrons provided limited local assistance. The surviving documentation, however, does not securely identify a standard set of famine substitutes. Claims about particular wild leaves, roots, or modern Bengali dishes should not be projected back to 1770 without direct evidence.
Weather initiated the shortage, but political economy shaped its severity. Since 1765 the East India Company had held the diwani, the right to collect Bengal’s revenue. Company officials continued pressing for cash revenue while cultivators faced crop loss and soaring grain prices. Contemporary accusations also blamed merchants, intermediaries, and Company servants for hoarding or monopolizing rice. Historians disagree over the relative weight of these practices, but there is broad support for the conclusion that weak institutional relief, revenue pressure, market disruption, and unequal access to grain converted harvest failure into mass famine.
Mortality cannot be stated precisely. The famous claim that roughly one-third of Bengal’s inhabitants died came from contemporary and later official estimates, while revisionist scholarship proposes substantially lower totals. All estimates rest on incomplete demographic records. The physical and agricultural damage is clearer: reports described deserted villages, lost labor, and extensive abandoned cultivation; one report placed abandoned cultivated land in badly affected Birbhum at about 36 percent. Recovery remained difficult because survivors lacked seed, draft resources, credit, and workers.
The disaster also changed how the Company observed scarcity. Officials increasingly collected crop, price, stock, and mortality information, investigated alleged grain monopolies, and later experimented with state granaries. A large granary system established in the 1790s proved costly and was abandoned in 1803. The famine’s most defensible modern connection is therefore not a particular recipe but a continuing lesson of food security: drought becomes famine through the interaction of harvests, purchasing power, markets, public authority, and relief.
Historical context
The East India Company was transforming from a commercial corporation into a territorial state. It had received the diwani of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa in 1765, only four years before the drought, while the nawab’s administration retained nominal civil responsibilities under an unstable system of divided authority. Bengal was a major producer and exporter of rice, textiles, sugar, and other goods, connected by dense river routes to inland and maritime markets. Population estimates are highly uncertain, but the affected province contained tens of millions of people. In Britain, early industrialization was accelerating, and Company conduct in Bengal was becoming a major subject of political controversy.

Dating
StrongThe acute famine is securely dated to 1769–1770 and is identified in Bengali tradition with year 1176. Investigations, depopulation, and agricultural disruption continued afterward, but treating the acute famine itself as lasting through 1773 is less precise.
Food identification
StrongRice is directly and repeatedly identified as Bengal’s principal staple and the grain at the center of the shortage. Sources also document pulses, salt, puffed rice, flattened rice, and treacle-coated parched paddy in the wider late-eighteenth-century rural diet.
Preparation method
LimitedNormal rice preparations such as boiled, puffed, flattened, and parched rice are documented, but the surviving evidence does not establish a standardized famine meal or a secure list of emergency substitutes used in 1769–1770.
Geographic attribution
ModerateThe famine affected the historical Bengal province, including districts in present-day West Bengal, Bangladesh, Bihar, and adjoining areas, with major regional differences in severity. A single coordinate can represent only the broader Bengal region.

Limitations

The acute event is consistently dated to 1769–1770 in archival catalogues and scholarship. Depopulation, uncultivated land, revenue problems, and official investigations continued through 1773 and beyond, but 1773 should be understood as aftermath rather than the end of the acute famine.

The description limits the location to Bengal in present-day India and Bangladesh, but the historical province and famine also included severely affected areas of present-day Bihar. Severity varied substantially, and parts of southeastern Bengal were less affected.

The famine was not itself a technology. It stimulated later administrative data collection, botanical-transfer proposals, and public-granary experiments, which are technological or institutional consequences of the crisis.
