Doji Bara or Skull Famine

Reconstruction

The Doji Bara, remembered in parts of the western Deccan as the Skull Famine, was the most acute phase of a wider scarcity crisis spanning roughly 1790–1792. Severe monsoon weakness struck southern and western India unevenly: some districts retained crops while neighboring regions lost harvests. Modern climate reconstructions support exceptionally weak rainfall over much of peninsular and western India in 1791, within a longer period of climatic disturbance. Drought alone, however, does not explain who starved. Warfare, damaged cultivation, livestock losses, disrupted transport, currency problems, and unequal access to grain turned harvest failure into famine.

The threatened foods were the everyday foundations of regional diets. Later official compilations record steep prices for rice, millet, gram, and other grains in Dharwar and Belgaum, while Poona records name rice, bajra, jowar, wheat, tur, and gram. Scarcity therefore affected both cereals and pulses, weakening diets already reduced in quantity. Retrospective district traditions report people surviving on leaves, berries, roots, and herbs where grain became unobtainable. Such testimony documents remembered desperation, but its most sensational details were recorded decades later and should not be treated as precise eyewitness evidence.

Warfare intensified the emergency. During the Third Anglo-Mysore War, armies depended heavily on local supplies, destroyed provisions to deny them to opponents, lost transport animals, and prompted cultivators to flee threatened areas. In the Northern Circars, officials reported that starving laborers consumed immature grain before harvest and slaughtered cattle intended for agricultural work. These were rational survival choices with destructive consequences: eating seed or draft animals reduced the capacity to recover when rain returned.

Relief varied sharply by government and locality. Madras authorities removed some duties on grain and foodstuffs, sought rice from Bengal, shipped rice toward Ganjam, and considered feeding destitute children. Some local distributions included rice and ragi porridge. Yet imports were delayed, regional embargoes impeded movement, and administrative capacity was limited. In western districts under Maratha authority, later reports describe private charity and isolated seizures or distributions of grain rather than a coordinated system.

Mortality was unquestionably severe, but widely repeated totals for the entire famine are not securely established. Reports of abandoned villages, migration, family separation, self-sale, and collapsed cultivation are more defensible than a single death figure. The name Skull Famine comes chiefly from later administrative accounts and local memory of unburied remains. Its lasting importance lies in the policy debate it provoked over irrigation, grain movement, and public granaries. The crisis demonstrated a principle central to food security today: famine arises not only when food production falls, but when war, poverty, transport failures, and policy prevent people from obtaining what food remains.

Historical context

The Indian subcontinent was divided among the East India Company, the Maratha Confederacy, Hyderabad under Nizam Ali Khan, Mysore under Tipu Sultan, and numerous smaller powers. The Third Anglo-Mysore War lasted from 1790 to 1792, placing large armies and their supply systems in already drought-stressed country. Long-distance grain movement depended on pack animals, Banjara trading networks, coastal shipping, and roads that became difficult or dangerous during war. Elsewhere, the French Revolution was transforming European politics, while British authorities in India were beginning to collect rainfall, crop, price, and population information more systematically and to debate irrigation and public grain storage.

Written sources

StrongEast India Company correspondence, revenue proceedings, nineteenth-century official famine reports, district gazetteers, and Hyderabad administrative histories document drought, crop loss, grain prices, relief measures, migration, and depopulation. Some frequently repeated local details were recorded retrospectively rather than during the crisis.

Dating

StrongDocumentary evidence securely places the principal crisis in 1790–1792, with 1791–1792 conventionally identified as its most severe phase. Distress and agricultural consequences continued into 1792–1793 in some territories.

Food identification

ModerateAdministrative price lists and relief records directly identify rice, millet, gram, bajra, jowar, wheat, tur, and ragi porridge. Reports of roots, leaves, berries, and herbs are less taxonomically specific and often derive from later compilations.

Preparation method

LimitedRagi or natcheny porridge and measured rice distributions are documented in relief contexts, but the preparation of most foods consumed during the wider famine is not described.

Geographic attribution

ModerateThe wider crisis is documented across the Northern Circars, Mysore, Hyderabad, the southern Maratha territories, and western Deccan districts. The name Doji Bara is especially associated with later memory in parts of present-day Karnataka and Maharashtra and should not automatically be treated as the contemporary name everywhere affected.

Historical interpretation

ProbableMonsoon failure is strongly supported, while the relative contributions of warfare, taxation, monetary disruption, merchant behavior, transport constraints, and administrative decisions varied by locality. A single-cause explanation is not defensible.

Visual reconstruction

InterpretiveNo visual representation can directly reconstruct typical famine consumption across such a large region. Any scene of relief feeding, grain markets, migration, or emergency foraging would require explicit labeling as a locality-specific reconstruction.
