Ethiopian Great Famine

Reconstruction

Known in Ethiopian memory as Kifu Qen, the “Evil Days,” the Great Famine of 1888–1892 was not simply a drought disaster. It arose from interacting failures in livestock, farming, security, markets, and public health. Rinderpest, a highly lethal viral disease of cattle and other ungulates, reached the Horn of Africa in the late 1880s and killed cattle on a catastrophic scale. Although the virus did not infect people, its consequences entered nearly every part of the food system.

Cattle provided milk, meat, hides, wealth, and, critically, oxen for ploughing. When draught animals died, many farmers could not prepare their fields even where seed and labor remained. Failed or irregular rainfall compounded the loss, while locusts and caterpillars damaged crops. Warfare and raiding had already devastated parts of western and northern Ethiopia, destroying homes, tools, seed stocks, and livestock. In several districts, grain disappeared from markets or became prohibitively expensive. Typhus, smallpox, cholera, dysentery, and other infections then preyed upon displaced and malnourished populations.

Sources describe the disappearance of ordinary cereal foods. An oral verse from northeastern Shewa contrasts formerly eating teff injera with yogurt against surviving on amad-mado leaves. People gathered sycamore figs, enkoy plums, antarya, grasses, herbs, and roots. Some roots and greens were cooked, often without salt because salt itself had become unaffordable. A Beta Israel correspondent reported that his household had gone two years without meat or butter. Contemporary reports also contain extreme accounts of carrion eating and cannibalism. Such testimony conveys the perceived horror of the crisis, but these incidents cannot be quantified or treated as representative behavior.

The famine’s geography and severity varied, and no census permits a reliable national death toll. Contemporary and later estimates commonly suggest that between one-third and two-thirds of inhabitants died in some regions; the often-repeated claim that Ethiopia lost one-third of its entire population remains plausible but unprovable. Death, flight, and delayed return altered settlements. Among Beta Israel communities around Gondar and Lake Tana, the crisis weakened religious institutions, disrupted dietary and purity boundaries, reduced animal sacrifice, and encouraged some famine-driven conversions and migration.

Kifu Qen remains significant because it shows how famine can develop through linked shocks rather than food shortage alone: animal disease removed both food and agricultural power; conflict destroyed access and assets; ecological shocks reduced harvests; and epidemic disease magnified mortality. Rinderpest was globally eradicated in 2011, but the famine’s broader lesson endures: protecting livestock health, seed, markets, mobility, and public health is essential to protecting human diets.

Historical context

Ethiopia was undergoing a major political transition. Emperor Yohannes IV died in March 1889 during conflict with the Mahdist state, and Menelik II became emperor later that year. Italian expansion around the Red Sea culminated in the proclamation of the colony of Eritrea in 1890, while military movement and livestock commerce helped connect the Horn to wider disease routes. Most Ethiopians depended directly on rain-fed farming or pastoralism, and ox-drawn plough agriculture made cattle losses especially destructive. Ethiopia had no national census, so both its total population and the famine’s mortality remain uncertain despite repeated claims that roughly one-third of the population died.

Food identification

ModerateTeff injera, yogurt, meat, butter, salt, sycamore figs, and roots are clearly identified. The local famine greens antarya and amad-mado are historically attested, but their precise botanical identification is not established by the cited historical evidence.

Historical interpretation

ModerateThe interpretation of the famine as a compound crisis involving rinderpest, rainfall failure, crop pests, conflict, market disruption, and epidemic disease is well supported. The relative contribution of each factor varied locally.

LimitedNational mortality cannot be calculated securely because no reliable census baseline exists. Regional estimates and the frequently repeated national loss of one-third should be treated as approximate rather than measured.

InterpretiveAny visual scene combining dead cattle, fallow fields, foragers, empty markets, and displaced families would synthesize reports from different places and moments rather than reproduce a directly observed single scene.
