Great Northern Chinese Famine

AD 1876

Reconstruction

The Great North China Famine began with drought in 1876 and became catastrophic after the near-total failure of rain across much of northern China in 1877. Its core shifted from Shandong and Zhili toward Henan, Shanxi, and Shaanxi. Southern Shanxi and northern Henan suffered especially severely, with mortality peaking in 1878. Estimates of total deaths range from roughly nine million to thirteen million, but nineteenth-century population records are incomplete and cannot support an exact figure.

Drought destroyed or prevented successive harvests of wheat, millet, sorghum, maize, and other northern staples. Grain prices rose beyond the means of households that had already sold livestock, tools, timber, and other possessions. Contemporary reports warned that some farmers had eaten seed grain needed for the next planting. Qing authorities even suspended distilling in parts of Zhili so that grain would not be diverted into alcohol. At Tianjin relief kitchens, refugees received minimal portions of millet gruel or steamed maize bread.

When ordinary food disappeared, people turned to emergency substances documented by contemporary observers: tree bark, rush roots, unripe wild fruits, leaves, millet stalks, and husks. A missionary travelling through Shanxi described cakes made by pounding soft mineral material into powder, mixing it with millet husks, and baking it. Such cakes supplied little nourishment and could cause severe digestive injury. Reports also described cannibalism, but these accounts require caution: some came through missionary and treaty-port publications written partly to mobilize donations, although Chinese local sources likewise treated survival cannibalism as an emblem of extreme social collapse.

The disaster was not simply an absence of food throughout China. Grain and imported rice reached Tianjin and other markets, yet inadequate roads, expensive animal transport, mountainous terrain, winter cold, speculation, and poverty obstructed delivery into inland districts. The Qing government distributed silver and grain, remitted taxes, regulated markets, and appointed relief commissioners, while local elites, Jiangnan merchants, missionaries, and overseas donors organized additional aid. Nevertheless, depleted granaries, fiscal pressures, recent warfare, and the famine's enormous scale overwhelmed these measures. Refugees crowded cities and relief shelters; disease and exposure compounded starvation.

The famine accelerated debates over railways, grain transport, official responsibility, and organized philanthropy. It also demonstrated a principle central to modern food security: harvest failure becomes mass famine through failures of access, purchasing power, logistics, health protection, and timely relief. Today's emergency grain reserves, seed protection, transport planning, cash assistance, and nutrition programs address precisely the vulnerabilities exposed in northern China between 1876 and 1879.

Historical context

China was ruled by the Qing dynasty under the young Guangxu Emperor, with Empress Dowager Cixi exercising dominant political influence. Contemporary observers estimated that drought threatened the livelihoods of approximately 60 to 80 million people across an affected area of roughly 650,000 square kilometres, although both figures were provisional. The crisis formed part of a wider 1875–1878 pattern of exceptional drought affecting monsoon Asia, Africa, and Brazil. Telegraphs could carry appeals rapidly between Shanghai, Europe, and North America, but northern China's sparse railway network meant that food still moved inland mainly by waterway, cart, and pack animal.

Food identification

Historical interpretation
