Aksum’s Red Sea Kingdom

Aksum’s food story begins not at the Red Sea shore but in the northern Ethiopian highlands, where the capital stood more than two thousand meters above sea level. Between the first and fifth centuries CE, Aksumite rulers joined this agrarian interior to the port of Adulis and to caravan routes crossing Eritrea and Tigrai. Monumental stelae, inscriptions, coins, imported ceramics and excavated towns reveal a state whose reach extended toward Arabia and whose commerce intersected routes between the Roman Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean.

Most food was produced locally rather than imported. Charred plant remains from Aksum and other northern highland settlements document wheat, barley, lentils and linseed, alongside African cereals including finger millet, sorghum and probable or securely identified teff in different contexts. The small size and poor survival of charred teff grains make its archaeological history especially difficult to reconstruct. Animal evidence indicates mixed farming involving cattle, sheep, goats and chickens. These species supplied meat and, by reasonable inference from their established uses, milk, eggs, hides, manure and traction, although the proportions consumed at particular meals remain unknown.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

No surviving Aksumite cookbook describes daily preparation. Grinding stones and the crop assemblage make cereal flour and cracked grain defensible, while breads, porridges and fermented drinks are reasonable reconstructions rather than directly observed recipes. Pulses could have been boiled or stewed, and linseed provided an edible oilseed. Grapes found in Aksumite deposits indicate access to fruit and potentially local wine production, but a grape seed alone does not establish how the fruit was processed.

Long-distance commerce widened this food world selectively. The first-century Periplus of the Erythraean Sea reports Mediterranean wine and olive oil among imports at Adulis, while ivory, tortoiseshell and rhinoceros horn moved outward. Later amphorae found around the Red Sea and in Aksumite territory support continued exchange, although vessel shape does not always prove its contents. From the fourth century, Christianity increased the institutional importance of wine because churches required it for the Eucharist. Imported foods were probably limited commodities associated with merchants, courts or religious establishments, not evidence that ordinary highland households depended on overseas provisions.

Aksum’s importance therefore lay in connecting two food systems: resilient mixed agriculture in the highlands and seasonal maritime trade governed by Red Sea winds and Indian Ocean monsoons. Wheat, barley, teff, pulses, oilseeds, cattle and small ruminants remain central to northern Ethiopian farming and cuisine. That continuity concerns crops and husbandry, however, and does not prove that modern injera, stews or beverages were prepared in their present forms during Aksumite times.

Historical context

Aksum operated among the major powers and commercial zones of Late Antiquity. Roman and later Eastern Roman Egypt controlled the northern approaches to the Red Sea, the Sasanian Empire arose in 224 CE, and Himyar held power across the sea in southern Arabia. Monsoon-linked shipping connected Red Sea ports with western India, while caravans carried goods between Adulis and the Ethiopian highlands. Aksum began issuing its own coinage around the late third century, and King Ezana’s fourth-century adoption of Christianity was expressed in inscriptions and coin imagery. The kingdom itself continued beyond 500 CE, so the card represents its early and middle florescence rather than its complete history.

ModerateAnimal bones and associated evidence support mixed livestock keeping involving cattle, sheep, goats and chickens, but assemblage coverage is uneven and cannot define a single kingdom-wide diet.

StrongThe Periplus Maris Erythraei directly describes Adulis, its commercial connections and commodities, although the precise political relationship between its named ruler and later Aksumite institutions remains debated.

StrongStratigraphy, radiocarbon determinations, pottery sequences, inscriptions and coin series collectively support an Aksumite chronology spanning the card’s 100–500 CE interval.

Preparation method

LimitedGrinding and crop processing are supported archaeologically, but specific breads, porridges, stews and fermented beverages are reconstructions based on ingredients, equipment and broader culinary practice.

Geographic attribution

StrongAksum is securely identified as the highland capital, while Adulis and intermediate settlements document the corridor connecting the capital with the Red Sea.

Historical interpretation

ProbableThe interpretation of Aksum as an intermediary linking highland production with Red Sea commerce is well supported, but the volume of food trade and its effects on ordinary consumption cannot be quantified.

Visual reconstruction

InterpretiveAny complete scene of an Aksumite meal, market, farm or caravan must combine evidence from separate sites and periods and should not be treated as a directly observed tableau.
