The work commonly called the Taozhu gong Yangyu jing, or Lord Taozhu’s Classic on Fish Farming, is traditionally attributed to Fan Li, the statesman associated with the southern state of Yue in the late sixth and fifth centuries BCE. It is often described as the earliest specialist aquaculture manual. That description requires qualification: no fifth-century manuscript survives. The known text is a fragment quoted in Jia Sixie’s agricultural compendium Qimin yaoshu, compiled around the sixth century CE, and modern scholars have substantial reasons to suspect that it was composed or reshaped after Fan Li’s lifetime.

The fragment presents fish culture as a profitable livelihood. In a dialogue, Lord Taozhu recommends constructing a pond of six mu with nine islets and eight deeper channels or hollows. The farmer is instructed to stock twenty large, egg-bearing carp and four males early in the second lunar month. Soft-shelled turtles are introduced later in the year. The stated reason—that the turtles stop a dragon from leading the fish away—is cosmological rather than biological, reminding readers that practical instruction and auspicious lore were not sharply separated.

Other directions amount to a recognizable program of managed production: select breeding fish, provide varied pond depths, time stocking to the reproductive season, retain part of the harvest as broodstock, and sell fish of different sizes over successive years. The enormous projected yields and profits should not be treated as audited results. They function partly as persuasion, demonstrating that a deliberately managed pond could generate recurring wealth. Measurements are equally difficult to convert because the text’s date is uncertain and units changed over time.

Carp were the food at the center of this system, but the fragment is more concerned with producing and marketing them than with cooking them. Its importance lies in portraying aquatic animals as a renewable agricultural asset rather than merely a wild catch. Archaeological research indicates that people in China managed common carp millennia earlier, including probable aquaculture at Jiahu around 6200–5700 BCE. The manual therefore did not invent fish farming; it preserves a later literary formulation of accumulated knowledge.

Its legacy is best understood as textual and conceptual. Pond design, broodstock selection, seasonal reproduction, retention of breeding animals, and scheduled harvesting remain fundamental aquaculture concerns. Later Chinese farming books repeatedly transmitted and expanded such ideas, including more complex polyculture. Yet a continuous, unchanged line from Fan Li to modern carp farms cannot be demonstrated. What survives is an influential early portrait of fish farming as planned ecological management, food production, and commercial enterprise.

Historical context

If the traditional fifth-century BCE setting is retained, the Eastern Zhou world was entering the era conventionally called the Warring States period. Yue defeated neighboring Wu in 473 BCE, while regional states competed through warfare, administration, trade, irrigation, and increasingly intensive agriculture; political unification under Qin remained more than two centuries away, occurring in 221 BCE. The lower Yangtze was a landscape of rivers, lakes, wetlands, and rice agriculture favorable to freshwater fishing and fish management. The surviving aquaculture passage itself, however, is preserved only in a sixth-century CE agricultural work and may reflect Han or later knowledge rather than a securely dated fifth-century manual.

Historical interpretation

ModerateThe passage strongly supports the existence of a developed literary conception of commercial carp farming by the time of its sixth-century preservation. How much represents pre-imperial practice, Han knowledge, literary idealization, or later editing remains disputed.
