Reconstruction
Makapansgat is a cave system in the Limpopo province of South Africa whose deposits have yielded Australopithecus africanus alongside a large associated fauna. Unlike an open-air site, a cave accumulates: bones wash in, fall in, or are carried in by predators, and the resulting assemblage is a sample of a landscape rather than the residue of a meal. That makes Makapansgat valuable for reconstructing an environment and awkward for reconstructing behaviour, and both matter to what can honestly be said about food here. The dietary evidence comes from tooth enamel. Carbon isotope measurements are available for a small number of africanus specimens from Makapansgat Member 3, and they show the same pattern found at other South African sites: mixed C3 and C4 signals, meaning a diet drawing on both woodland plants and the grasses, sedges and grazing animals of open ground. Four specimens is a thin sample and should not be pressed hard, but it is consistent with the broader picture of africanus as a dietary generalist rather than a specialist. The fauna recovered with the hominins indicates a varied environment, with wooded and open components rather than a single habitat, which is the ecological setting such a generalist diet implies. What is absent is as informative as what is present. There are no stone tools in these deposits contemporary with the hominins, no hearths, and no evidence of any processing beyond what teeth and hands could accomplish. Foods available on that basis are fruits, seeds, leaves, the underground storage organs of sedges and other plants, insects, and whatever animal tissue could be obtained by gathering or opportunistic scavenging. Nothing at Makapansgat demonstrates meat eating, and nothing rules it out. The C4 component of the isotope signal is genuinely ambiguous on this point: it can be produced by eating grasses and sedges directly, or by eating animals that grazed on them, and enamel chemistry alone cannot separate the two. This is why the same measurements support both a plant-dominated and a partly carnivorous reading of these hominins. The site's contribution to food history is therefore contextual rather than dramatic. It extends the range of Australopithecus africanus and confirms that flexible, mixed plant-dominated foraging was the pattern across southern Africa and not merely at one locality. In a record where single spectacular finds attract attention, cave sequences like this one supply the ordinary background against which the spectacular can be judged, and they are the reason the dietary breadth of these hominins is described as a species-wide characteristic rather than an individual quirk.
Historical context
In the range of roughly 3.2 to 2.6 million years ago, hominins were present only in Africa. No stone-tool industry is securely dated in southern Africa and fire is unknown. The Makapansgat valley combined woodland with open grassland, and its caves trapped the remains of monkeys, antelope, hyaenas and large cats along with hominins. Nothing resembling cultivation, herding or storage existed anywhere on earth, and would not for another two and a half million years.
