Beeches Pit Fire Makers

Beeches Pit is an old marl working on the edge of the Breckland at West Stow in Suffolk, where interglacial deposits rest directly on the till left by the Anglian glaciation. Springs laid down tufa and carbonate through the sequence, and the vertebrates and molluscs preserved in it point unambiguously to the Hoxnian, Marine Isotope Stage 11. Thermoluminescence on burnt flint gives 414,000 plus or minus 30,000 years, uranium-series on carbonate nodules a minimum of more than 400,000, and amino acid racemisation agrees.

The flintwork is Acheulean and includes many pieces that refit, which means knapping happened where the debris lies rather than somewhere upstream. Charred material is abundant through three stratigraphic units. Bones and flints are burnt in quantity, and several discrete patches of reddened sediment appear to be hearths. Three observations strengthen that reading. Charred and calcined bone implies temperatures of 600 to 800 degrees, well above what a slow surface burn delivers. Two burnt flakes refit onto an adjacent group that is unburnt, so the heat was intense, local, and applied after the flakes were struck. And two burnt areas intersect, which implies separate burning events rather than one.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

From this the excavators proposed a focus of repeated activity, perhaps something like a home base, occupied within closed deciduous woodland in a fully temperate climate and persisting as conditions deteriorated. In wider surveys of European fire evidence, Beeches Pit sits among the sites marking the point after which fire becomes a regular part of the archaeological signal rather than a rare anomaly, a threshold placed within roughly the last 400,000 years and not before.

One distinction has since become sharper, and it cuts against the way this site is usually labelled. Using fire is not the same as making it. In work published in 2025, excavations at East Farm, Barnham, about ten kilometres away and of the same Hoxnian age, produced hearths with baked sediment, heat-shattered handaxes and two fragments of iron pyrite. Pyrite does not occur in the local geology, so it was carried in, and struck against flint it throws sparks. That is a fire-making kit, and it is the earliest yet identified anywhere. In that study Beeches Pit appears as one of the neighbouring sites documenting fire use through baked sediments, charcoal and heated artefacts and bones, rather than fire production.

The subsistence record is thinner than the fire record. The bones matter here chiefly because they were calcined, which is what fixes the temperature. A substantial cut-marked assemblage is not among the site's strengths, and what people actually ate at Beeches Pit is largely inferred from the fauna present in a temperate British woodland rather than demonstrated on the bones themselves. What the site does establish, unusually well for its age, is that fire was kept and used repeatedly in one place.

Historical context

Around 400,000 years ago, Britain was a peninsula of continental Europe and the Anglian ice had recently withdrawn, leaving the Hoxnian interglacial's closed deciduous woodland across East Anglia with fallow and red deer, horse, aurochs, rhinoceros and beaver. The hominins present were pre-Neanderthals carrying Acheulean handaxes, part of the same population range as the contemporaries at Barnham nearby, Bilzingsleben in Thuringia and Aroeira in Portugal. Fire was becoming a recurrent feature of European sites within this window. Boxgrove lay a hundred thousand years in the past, Schoeningen a hundred thousand in the future, and no modern humans existed.

Archaeological

StrongAn Acheulean flint industry including numerous refitting pieces occurs in a stratified interglacial sequence resting on Anglian till. The refits demonstrate that knapping took place at the spot rather than the material being transported in.

Dating

ModerateBiostratigraphy from vertebrates and molluscs places the sequence firmly in the Hoxnian, MIS 11. Thermoluminescence on burnt flint gives 414,000 plus or minus 30,000 years, uranium-series on carbonate nodules a minimum of over 400,000, with amino acid racemisation in agreement. The absolute uncertainty is wide.

Preparation method

Historical interpretation

InterpretiveThe excavators proposed that the locality was a focus of repeated activity, perhaps a home base. This is a reasonable reading of the refits, the repeated burning and the spring setting, but it is a proposal rather than a demonstrated site function.
