Bilzingsleben Lakeside Camp

Reconstruction

A travertine quarry above the river Wipper in Thuringia exposed, between 1969 and 2002, one of the largest Lower Palaeolithic assemblages in central Europe. Karst springs fed a small pool and a fringe of tufa; the tufa hardened over the find layer and sealed it. Dietrich Mania's excavations covered roughly 1,800 square metres and recovered thirty-seven human bones and teeth from at least three individuals, quantities of flint and quartzite, worked bone and antler, and animals of fifty-four species.

The subsistence evidence turns on an unexpected animal. Among the fauna are 2,496 beaver specimens, 1,963 teeth and 533 bones, the largest Pleistocene beaver assemblage known. At least forty-six elements carry stone-tool cut marks, and their placement is diagnostic. Marks on mandibles, distal tibiae, calcanei and metapodials fall where a skinner cuts; marks on vertebrae, scapulae, pelves and limb bones record disarticulation; cuts on femoral shafts indicate meat removal. The age profile is dominated by prime-age young adults, the animals most likely to be caught roaming on land in search of their own territory. Together these point to repeated, deliberate hunting rather than opportunistic collection of drowned carcasses.

That matters because it undercuts a long-standing assumption. Middle Pleistocene hominins are usually credited with a narrow diet of large game, with broad-spectrum foraging arriving only late in the Pleistocene. Bilzingsleben shows systematic exploitation of a medium-sized, fat-rich, pelt-bearing rodent, and not under duress: rhinoceros, bear, aurochs, horse and bison are abundant in the same deposits, so nobody was driven to beavers by a shortage of anything larger.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

The site's fame rests on a shakier claim. Mania reported three oval settings of stone and bone with associated burnt patches, paved areas and an anvil, and read them as hut foundations around hearths, a Middle Pleistocene camp preserved in place. Renewed excavation between 2003 and 2005 found no living floors and no camp structures, and attributed the concentration of flint and bone to gravitational mass flow, noting different patinas and damage on single pieces. A review of the site's ostracod faunas reached a compatible conclusion, that the find-bearing layer is at least not undisturbed. The incised elephant tibia sometimes offered as early symbolism belongs in the same category of unresolved claims.

The date is unresolved too. Uranium-series and electron spin resonance measurements on travertine and on rhinoceros tooth enamel span roughly 320,000 to 412,000 years and cannot decide between two interglacials, with later thorium work suggesting a minimum near 350,000. The most recent biostratigraphy, using ostracod index species, and the beaver study both favour Marine Isotope Stage 11 at around 400,000 years. What survives all of this intact is the butchery: whatever the arrangement of stones meant, people came back to this spring repeatedly and skinned and jointed beavers there.

Historical context

Most likely during the warm Marine Isotope Stage 11 interglacial around 400,000 years ago, central Europe was covered in mixed deciduous forest with open patches, and its rivers and spring pools drew rhinoceros, aurochs, bison, horse, bear and enormous numbers of beaver. The hominins present were pre-Neanderthals working Acheulean and simpler flake industries. Fire was in use at contemporary sites in Britain, Portugal and France, though its presence here is bound up with contested structural claims. Wooden spears at Schoeningen and the great butchery sites of northern Europe still lay a hundred thousand years ahead. No modern humans existed anywhere.

Evidence

Zooarchaeological

StrongOf 2,496 beaver specimens, at least forty-six elements carry stone-tool cut marks whose anatomical placement distinguishes skinning, disarticulation and meat removal. A prime-age dominated mortality profile independently indicates hunting rather than natural death and collection.

Food identification

StrongBeaver is securely identified as food and raw material, from both Castor fiber and the extinct Trogontherium cuvieri. Rhinoceros and bear exploitation is also reported, and large game including aurochs, horse and bison is abundant in the deposits.

Preparation method

ModerateSkinning and disarticulation are well evidenced by cut mark placement. Marks unambiguously tied to meat removal are limited to femoral shafts, which the analysts attribute to muscle being gnawed or softened rather than to beaver meat being ignored. No cooking method is demonstrated.

Dating

LimitedUranium-series and ESR results on travertine and rhinoceros enamel span roughly 320,000 to 412,000 years and cannot separate MIS 9 from MIS 11. Ostracod index species and the recent faunal work favour MIS 11 near 400,000 years, but the site has no single agreed age.

Archaeological

LimitedThe assemblage itself is enormous and securely from the site, but its spatial integrity is disputed. Excavations in 2003 to 2005 found no living floors or camp structures and attributed the flint and bone concentration to gravitational mass flow, with mixed patinas on individual pieces.

Iconographic

InterpretiveAn elephant tibia fragment bearing two groups of parallel incised lines has been claimed as deliberate marking and possible early symbolism. The claim is unresolved and taphonomic alternatives for incisions on Middle Pleistocene bone are not excluded.
