Çayönü’s Mixed Economy

Reconstruction

Çayönü Tepesi, on the Ergani plain near the upper Tigris, preserves an unusually long record of the transition from hunting and gathering to village farming. Its Pre-Pottery Neolithic occupation began before the interval assigned to this card, probably around 9500 BCE, and continued to approximately 7000 BCE. Across that sequence, round structures gave way to rectangular grill-plan, channelled, cobble-paved, cell-plan and large-room buildings. The term “grill-plan” describes rows of stone foundation walls, not cooking equipment; their exact functions remain debated.

The food record is equally important. Carbonized plant remains directly identify cultivated einkorn and emmer wheat, field pea, lentil and bitter vetch. Pulses are more abundant than cereals in the analyzed archaeobotanical assemblage. Earlier levels contain emmer grains retaining wild-type characteristics, illustrating why cultivation cannot always be equated immediately with full morphological domestication. Residents also collected wild pistachios and probably wild vetch in quantity. Grass pea and chickpea occur, but their status as crops is uncertain, while barley does not appear to have been deliberately cultivated or collected.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

Animal bones show that farming did not replace hunting in a single event. Wild boar, aurochs, sheep, goats and deer belonged to the surrounding woodland-steppe environment and continued to be hunted. Through time, however, mortality patterns and body-size changes among pigs, cattle, sheep and goats indicate increasingly controlled relationships. Pig remains are particularly revealing: researchers identify a gradual intermediate condition between ordinary hunting and fully domestic husbandry rather than a sharply dated moment of domestication. Sheep and goats became increasingly prominent late in the sequence, while exploitation of wild animals continued throughout the aceramic occupation.

Archaeology identifies ingredients more securely than meals. Grain and pulses could have been ground, parched, roasted or cooked with water, and meat could have been roasted or boiled, but particular recipes cannot be reconstructed directly. Çayönü predates routine pottery use, so any boiling would have depended on perishable, skin or stone containers and possibly heated stones; these details remain reasonable possibilities rather than demonstrated local practices. Hearths, grinding equipment, charred seeds and butchered bones nevertheless document substantial labor in processing food.

Çayönü matters because it shows a mixed economy being reorganized over many generations. Cultivation, gathering, hunting and animal management overlapped while houses, storage practices and communal institutions changed around them. The familiar modern combination of wheat, pulses, nuts and livestock has a defensible connection to this transformation, but Çayönü should not be presented as their single birthplace. It is instead one exceptionally detailed record of how Upper Mesopotamian communities helped create durable food-producing lifeways.

Historical context

Communities across the Fertile Crescent were establishing permanent or repeatedly occupied villages while cultivation and animal management developed at different rates from place to place. Most of Çayönü’s main Neolithic sequence preceded widespread pottery, although residents constructed substantial stone-founded buildings and worked imported obsidian as well as locally accessible malachite and native copper. Göbekli Tepe and other Upper Mesopotamian settlements participated in overlapping regional networks. Çayönü’s excavated deposits cover thousands of square metres, but no defensible population total is available.
