Reconstruction
When Norse settlers arrived from Iceland around 985 CE, they established dispersed farms along the comparatively sheltered fjords of southwestern Greenland. Brattahlíð, near present-day Qassiarsuk, became a prominent estate in the Eastern Settlement and was associated in later Icelandic narratives with Erik the Red. Archaeological ruins reveal a pastoral landscape of turf-and-stone dwellings, byres, barns, churches, grazing grounds and hay meadows. Yet the settlers did not simply reproduce Icelandic farming. They built a mixed food system adapted to an Arctic environment.
Cattle, sheep and goats formed the agricultural core. Larger, wealthier farms generally maintained more cattle, while sheep and goats were especially important at smaller holdings. Animal ages represented in excavated bones suggest that cattle could be retained for milk, while caprines supplied varying combinations of meat, milk, hides and wool. Turning milk into butter, cheese or other cultured products would fit wider North Atlantic practice and the need for storable food, but no surviving Greenlandic recipe identifies exactly what farmers made. Livestock had to be grazed during summer and supported through winter with harvested fodder, making hay production, manure management and access to productive land essential.
Farm middens show that hunting greatly expanded this domestic supply. Seal bones are abundant, alongside reindeer, Arctic hare, seabirds and occasional walrus. At the well-excavated Farm Beneath the Sand in the Western Settlement, fish included Arctic char, cod and capelin, although fish bones preserve unevenly and may underrepresent consumption. The precise cooking methods are poorly documented. Meat could plausibly have been boiled, roasted, dried or otherwise stored using techniques familiar elsewhere in the medieval North Atlantic, but attributing a specific everyday menu would exceed the evidence.
Human bone collagen provides a second line of evidence. Carbon and nitrogen isotope measurements from several churchyards indicate large individual variation but, overall, increasing reliance on marine protein through the settlement’s history. This does not prove that farming was abandoned. Instead, livestock keeping and marine hunting remained interdependent, while later communities obtained a greater share of dietary protein from seals and other sea resources. Walrus hunting also connected Greenland to European markets through the ivory trade, although walrus meat should not be assumed to have been a dietary staple everywhere.
The settlements’ disappearance was not a simple case of farmers refusing to adapt. Research instead identifies interacting pressures, including drying that threatened fodder production, climatic and sea-ice variability, labor shortages, hazardous travel, changing trade networks and dependence on distant ivory hunting. Norse occupation ended by about the mid-fifteenth century, but its exact course remains disputed. Farming later returned under culturally distinct Inuit-European communities. Today’s sheep farms in Kujataa therefore occupy some of the same workable landscapes without representing an uninterrupted continuation of medieval Norse society.
Historical context
Norse Greenland was a small, dispersed Atlantic society whose population probably numbered only a few thousand at its height. Its farms communicated by boat across long fjords and maintained links spanning roughly 1,400 kilometers to Iceland and farther to Norway. Christianity became institutionally established during the settlement period, while walrus ivory connected Greenland to medieval European towns and workshops. From the thirteenth century, Thule Inuit communities expanded into Greenland, creating possibilities for encounter and exchange that remain archaeologically difficult to reconstruct. In the fourteenth century, plague, political change and shifting commerce transformed Scandinavia, while increasingly variable environmental conditions complicated Greenlandic haymaking, hunting and navigation.
