Reconstruction
On the wet coastal plain south of Hangzhou Bay, Hemudu preserved what ordinary dryland sites often lose: wood, seeds, husks, woven materials, and food residues. Excavated after its discovery in 1973, the settlement contained raised timber architecture with mortise-and-tenon joinery, wells, black pottery, bone and wooden tools, and dense plant and animal remains. These finds place food production inside a carefully adapted wetland settlement, not an isolated “first rice farm.” Hemudu belonged to a wider lower Yangtze landscape of channels, marshes, forests, and cultivated plots.
Rice at Hemudu is direct archaeological evidence, occurring as grains, husks, stems, and impressions or inclusions in pottery. Tools traditionally described as agricultural implements include scapula spades and wooden objects that may have worked wet soils, although the function of every tool is not certain. Evidence from nearby Tianluoshan, another Hemudu-culture settlement, provides a better-sampled sequence: rice increased relative to gathered plants, while non-shattering spikelet bases became more common. This shows cultivation and selection in progress rather than a sudden appearance of fully domesticated rice.
The inhabitants did not live on rice alone. Waterlogged deposits preserved acorns, water chestnuts, foxnuts, peaches, plums, and other fruits and nuts. Fish, deer, pigs, buffalo, and additional animals occur in the faunal record. The resulting picture is a mixed food economy combining cultivation with gathering, fishing, and hunting. Rice was increasingly important, but interpretations that make it the settlement’s sole or necessarily dominant staple exceed the evidence.
Pottery provides glimpses of preparation. Molecular and isotopic research at Tianluoshan found vessels used mainly for starchy terrestrial foods, though the chemical markers were not specific enough to identify rice in every pot. At Hemudu itself, analyses of bowl crusts identified bone-derived mineral material together with acorn starch; treating this as a deliberate acorn-and-bone preparation is probable but remains an interpretation. A preliminary study of another vessel reported microscopic remains consistent with rice, acorn, legumes, lily bulbs, and grasses, demonstrating that some pots held mixtures rather than a single grain.
Hemudu matters because it captures farming as a gradual reorganization of an already diverse wetland cuisine. Cultivation, gathering, fishing, pottery cooking, woodworking, and water-adapted construction operated together. The site contributes to the long lower Yangtze history from managed rice populations toward dependable agriculture and eventually fully domesticated japonica rice. It is therefore relevant to the deep history of modern rice foodways, but it is not evidence for one specific surviving recipe, nor can it alone be called the unique birthplace of rice cultivation.
Historical context
Approximately 5000–4500 BCE for the principal Hemudu occupation, Neolithic communities across China were developing different food systems. Millet-based dry farming was becoming established in northern China, while lower Yangtze settlements combined rice cultivation with fishing, hunting, and intensive use of wetland and woodland plants. There were no written records, cities, or states in the region. Communities nevertheless built substantial timber structures, dug wells, made pottery and lacquered objects, and managed increasingly settled landscapes. Near Hangzhou Bay, changing river courses, wetlands, and relative sea level repeatedly altered the land available for settlement and cultivation.

Archaeological
