Reconstruction
FLK Zinj, in Bed I at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, is the most intensively studied early archaeological site in the world, and for decades it has been the main proving ground for claims about early Homo behaviour. Mary Leakey's excavation in 1960 and 1961 recovered roughly 2,500 Oldowan stone artefacts and about 3,500 fossil bone specimens from a single layer dated to approximately 1.84 million years ago. Nothing else of comparable age concentrates so much material in one place. The bones are the reason it matters for food history. Portions of at least 48 large mammal carcasses, predominantly bovids, were repeatedly carried to this spot from wherever the animals died. Transport is the key behaviour: it means selecting parts, abandoning the rest, and moving food to a chosen place rather than eating where it fell. The pattern is not one event but many, which makes it a foraging strategy rather than an incident. What kind of strategy is where the argument lies. Experimental work on the cut marks concluded that hominins were processing meat-bearing bones, the ones on which flesh was still abundant, rather than the defleshed remains of carcasses already worked over by big cats. If that reading holds, these hominins had early access to carcasses, which puts them in competition with lions and hyaenas rather than merely following them. The alternative, passive scavenging of leftovers, implies a much more marginal diet. The distinction is nutritionally enormous, and it has been contested on methodological grounds almost since the original analysis appeared: a formal comment two years later challenged how the experimental comparison had been constructed. The debate over early access versus passive scavenging at this site has continued for decades and is not settled. There is a second ambiguity the card's title conceals. The site takes its name from the Zinjanthropus skull Leakey found here, a specimen now classified as Paranthropus boisei, and remains of Homo habilis occur in the same layer. Two hominin species are physically present, and neither can be shown to have made the tools or cut the bones. Attribution to Homo habilis is conventional, resting largely on the assumption that our own lineage was the toolmaker, which the Nyayanga discoveries have made harder to hold. What FLK Zinj establishes securely is the behaviour, not the actor: by 1.84 million years ago, hominins in this landscape were selecting parts of large carcasses, transporting them to a preferred location, and dismembering them with stone tools, repeatedly, over a long period.
Historical context
Roughly 1.84 million years ago, Homo habilis, Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei all occupied eastern Africa. Fire was not in controlled use, and the earliest credible traces of it lie several hundred thousand years ahead. Olduvai was a shallow alkaline lake basin with grassland, marsh and wooded margins, grazed by antelope, zebra and elephant and hunted by sabre-toothed cats and hyaenas. Oldowan technology was widespread. The first hominins to leave Africa reached Dmanisi in Georgia at almost exactly this date.

LimitedBoth Homo habilis and Paranthropus boisei are represented by fossils in the same layer. No fossil is associated with tool manufacture, so the butcher is unidentified.
Historical interpretation
InterpretiveThe early-access reading rests on experimental cut-mark comparison and was formally challenged on methodological grounds. The site's status as a home base rather than an accumulation has also been debated for decades.

The card names Homo habilis, but both Homo habilis and Paranthropus boisei are represented in the FLK Zinj layer, and the site is named for the latter. No fossil is associated with tool manufacture, so attributing the butchery to habilis is conventional rather than demonstrated.
