Reconstruction
On 20 May 1747, according to the account he published six years later, Royal Navy surgeon James Lind selected twelve sailors suffering from scurvy aboard HMS Salisbury. He placed them in the same part of the ship, gave them a common diet, and divided them into six pairs receiving different proposed remedies. This was an unusually systematic attempt to compare treatments under broadly similar conditions, although it was neither randomized nor blinded and was far smaller than a modern clinical trial.
Lind described the patients’ ordinary food as water gruel sweetened with sugar, mutton broth, puddings, boiled biscuit with sugar, and suppers such as barley with raisins, rice with currants, or sago and wine. These provisions supplied energy but little dependable vitamin C after weeks at sea. The treatment pairs received cider; dilute sulfuric acid known as elixir of vitriol; vinegar; seawater; a medicinal paste containing garlic, mustard seed, dried radish root, balsam of Peru, and myrrh; or two oranges and one lemon daily. The citrus supply lasted only six days, but Lind reported that it produced the quickest visible improvement: one recipient became fit for duty, while the other recovered enough to nurse the remaining sick.
The experiment is known principally from Lind’s 1753 A Treatise of the Scurvy. Surviving ship records confirm his service and help reconstruct Salisbury’s movements, but the muster roll records almost no sickness until the vessel returned to Plymouth. Historians disagree over whether this reflects deficient official recording, an institutional reluctance to acknowledge illness, or grounds for doubting details of Lind’s retrospective account. The comparison should therefore be described as reported rather than independently documented in every particular.
Lind neither discovered citrus as a scurvy remedy nor identified a nutritional deficiency. Mariners had used citrus before him, and vitamins were unknown. His explanations mixed environmental, digestive, and putrefactive theories. He also proposed preserving citrus as a concentrated syrup, or rob, made with heat—processing now known to destroy much of its vitamin C. These complications, together with cost, storage problems, competing remedies, and ambiguous institutional evidence, help explain why his publication did not immediately transform naval provisioning.
The Royal Navy adopted a general lemon-juice issue in 1795 after later naval experience and the advocacy of physicians including Gilbert Blane. Scurvy is now understood as vitamin C deficiency, which impairs collagen formation and weakens gums, skin, blood vessels, and wound healing. Lind’s defensible legacy lies not in a solitary discovery but in comparing treatments, recording a striking dietary response, and exposing a food-system problem: preserved provisions could sustain calories while losing an essential nutrient.

Britain was fighting France and its allies in the War of the Austrian Succession, and naval patrols protected commerce, blockaded ports, and searched for enemy shipping across the Channel approaches and Bay of Biscay. HMS Salisbury was a 50-gun fourth-rate warship with an official complement of roughly 300 men. Long-distance fleets could remain away from reliable fresh produce for weeks or months, depending on salted meat, ship’s biscuit, grains, dried fruit, beer, and other durable stores. European maritime trade already connected Atlantic ports with the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia, but preservation science could not yet explain why heating and prolonged storage made some foods ineffective against scurvy. The chemical identification of vitamin C remained nearly two centuries away.
