Reconstruction
Near the end of the last Ice Age, hunter-gatherers in what is now Aomori Prefecture began using one of humanity’s earliest ceramic technologies. The clearest local evidence comes not from Sannai Maruyama itself but from the Ōdai Yamamoto I site on the Tsugaru Peninsula. There, archaeologists recovered plain pottery fragments beside Late Paleolithic-style stone tools and projectile points. Radiocarbon measurements on carbonized material adhering to the sherds place them broadly around the fourteenth to thirteenth millennia BCE, depending on calibration and chronological model. The vessels therefore belong to the regional beginnings of Jōmon pottery thousands of years before the famous Sannai Maruyama settlement.
The exact meals prepared at Ōdai Yamamoto remain unknown. Carbonized deposits demonstrate that vessels were heated with organic material, but they have not securely identified a particular fish, plant, or recipe at this site. Broader chemical studies of Incipient Jōmon pottery from across Japan provide stronger comparative evidence: lipid biomarkers and stable isotopes show a marked preference for processing aquatic foods, probably including marine fish, freshwater fish, salmonids, shellfish, or aquatic mammals according to local availability. Applying that pattern specifically to Ōdai Yamamoto is a probable inference rather than direct species identification, although its location near a river seasonally visited by salmon and trout makes such use plausible.
Pottery enabled transformations that baskets, skins, and roasting fires handled poorly. A vessel could hold liquid over heat, simmer fatty tissues, produce broth, soften food, and recover oils. Early pots were scarce, relatively small, heavy, and breakable, so they did not necessarily signal permanent villages. Indeed, no dwellings, storage pits, or substantial constructed features have been identified in the earliest component at Ōdai Yamamoto. The occupants may have used portable shelters and visited the terrace seasonally or intermittently. Claims that these first pots directly prove intensive sedentary life therefore go beyond the evidence.
Their importance lies instead in a long regional trajectory. Pottery persisted through major climatic changes and became dramatically more abundant after the beginning of the Holocene. Across the archipelago, its association with aquatic processing remained remarkably durable even as forests expanded and people intensified their use of nuts, game, and other resources. Much later, between approximately 3900 and 2200 BCE, Sannai Maruyama developed into a large, long-lived settlement with pit dwellings, storage facilities, abundant pottery, fish and animal bones, and chestnuts and walnuts.
The early Aomori sherds do not establish a direct lineage to Sannai Maruyama or to modern Japanese clay-pot dishes. They nevertheless document a consequential culinary principle still familiar today: ceramic containers allow ingredients and water to be heated together, converting mobile resources into broths, softened foods, and concentrated fats. Any connection to modern nabe or donabe cooking is technological analogy, not demonstrated cultural continuity.
Historical context
Northern Honshu was passing from the cold Late Pleistocene into a period of rapid climatic change. Warming intensified around 12,750 BCE, followed by the Younger Dryas cold reversal from approximately 10,950 to 9,750 BCE and then the warmer Holocene. Shorelines lay below their modern positions, vegetation zones were shifting, and communities remained hunter-gatherers rather than rice farmers. Pottery had already appeared elsewhere in East Asia, including earlier examples in southern China, but ceramic production was still rare. At Ōdai Yamamoto, the combination of pottery with Late Paleolithic-style stone tools captures a technological transition rather than the sudden appearance of settled village agriculture.
