Reconstruction
About 40,000 years ago, Lake Mungo was not the dry basin seen today. It belonged to the Willandra Lakes, an inland overflow system fed from the eastern Australian highlands. People had already reached this landscape by approximately 50,000–46,000 years ago. Around 40,000 years ago they buried two individuals whose remains became known to researchers as Mungo Woman and Mungo Man. Mungo Woman was cremated and her bones were subsequently broken and interred; Mungo Man was laid in a grave associated with red ochre. These practices reveal deliberate treatment of the dead, although archaeology cannot recover their complete meanings or justify assigning specific religious beliefs.
Food remains and hearths show how people made a living beside fluctuating freshwater lakes. The strongest early evidence indicates aquatic harvesting, especially fish and freshwater mussels. Across the wider Willandra record, middens, bones, shells and eggshell document consumption of fish, freshwater crustaceans, birds or their eggs, and mammals. These materials accumulated over many periods, so they should not be treated as the menu of one burial-era meal. Nor is there secure evidence that Lake Mungo’s people routinely ate the region’s extinct megafauna. Plant foods were probably important, as they are in most foraging economies, but securely identified burial-period plants remain scarce. Grindstones associated with processing wild grass seeds appear much later in the regional sequence, before approximately 18,000 years ago.
Cooking fires were central to food preparation. Exposed hearths include patches of baked sediment, burned bone and installations interpreted as ovens using heated sediment, clay or other heat retainers. Such fires could roast fish, shellfish and meat directly or cook food within covered hearths, but individual recipes cannot be reconstructed. Later fish-bone hearths, directly dated to about 19,350 calibrated years before present, show people exploiting fish when evaporation made them easier to catch. Separate technological research indicates deliberate heat treatment of silcrete in the Willandra Lakes around 42,000 years ago, demonstrating that controlled fire also improved stone used for tools.
Lake Mungo matters because it preserves food getting, technology, mobility and mortuary practice within one changing landscape. As freshwater conditions became less dependable and aridity intensified, people adjusted where and when they gathered resources. The evidence does not establish an unchanged recipe tradition extending to the present. Its defensible modern connection is broader: Indigenous knowledge and cuisine in Australia remain grounded in careful observation of seasonal waters, plants and animals. Lake Mungo is ancestral Country for Barkandji/Paakantyi, Mutthi Mutthi and Ngiyampaa people, whose authority and cultural connection are essential to how this record is understood today.
Historical context
Lower global sea levels joined Australia, New Guinea and Tasmania within the larger continent of Sahul, although reaching Sahul from Southeast Asia had still required open-water crossings. Lake Mungo lay deep inside this inhabited continent. Between approximately 50,000 and 40,000 years ago, its water levels alternated between fuller and drier conditions, followed by sustained aridity after about 40,000 years ago. Farming, pottery and domesticated livestock were absent; food came from wild aquatic and terrestrial resources managed with fire, stone implements and organic tools. The size of the regional human population is unknown.

LimitedPlant consumption at the burial horizon is plausible but poorly identified directly. Evidence for wild grass-seed processing and grindstones belongs mainly to substantially later Willandra contexts.

ModerateFish remains, freshwater mussel shells, burned animal bone and eggshell support exploitation of aquatic and terrestrial animals, but many finds derive from different periods and cannot all be assigned to the approximately 40,000-year-old burials.
Residue chemical
ModerateIsotope and trace-element analysis of fish otoliths securely links some later hearths to fish harvested under evaporating lake conditions; it does not directly reconstruct burial-era meals.

ModerateFish and freshwater mussels are well supported, while broader identifications involving crustaceans, eggs, birds and mammals are regional and chronologically variable. Specific plants and recipes at the burial horizon remain uncertain.

Preparation method
