Lucy at Hadar

Lucy is a partial skeleton of Australopithecus afarensis, recovered in 1974 from the Hadar deposits of Ethiopia's Afar region and dated to roughly 3.2 million years ago. She matters to food history not because anyone can say what she ate on a given day, but because her species sits at the point where the hominin diet begins to widen. Reconstructing that diet depends on two independent lines of evidence, and they disagree in instructive ways. Dental microwear — the microscopic scratching left on enamel by food — points toward soft, sugar-rich fruit, while the size and shape of afarensis teeth would also have handled hard, brittle items, plausibly as fallback foods when fruit was out of season. Stable carbon isotopes in tooth enamel tell a different part of the story. They distinguish C3 plants, such as trees, shrubs and their fruits, from C4 plants, the tropical grasses and sedges of open ground. Afarensis enamel carries a measurable C4 signal, which earlier hominins largely lack. Something in the diet was drawing on grasses, sedges or the animals that ate them. Sedge tubers and the growing bases of grasses are the most economical explanation, since both are edible without tools and available where water sits. No cutting tools are known from Hadar at 3.2 million years, and no traces of fire, so preparation means what teeth, hands and perhaps a digging stick could accomplish: stripping, peeling, pounding on stone. The landscape itself was not stable. Faunal analysis across the Hadar Formation shows habitats shifting over several hundred thousand years, from closed and well-watered in the lower Sidi Hakoma Member, through edaphic grassland, to more open and arid conditions higher in the sequence. A population living through that would have met a repeatedly changing menu, and afarensis appears to have absorbed the change rather than tracking one habitat. That flexibility is the durable point. The interesting inheritance from this period is not a food but a strategy — the willingness to treat several plant tissues across several habitats as edible, and to fall back rather than fail when the preferred resource thins out. Every later development in this atlas, from the systematic processing of tubers to the domestication of grasses themselves, builds on a lineage that had already stopped specialising. Lucy is the best-known individual from that moment, though the dietary evidence comes from her species rather than from her own bones.

Historical context

Roughly 3.2 million years ago, no hominin made stone tools that survive: the oldest known flaked assemblages come later, and hominin anatomy still combined upright walking with a body built partly for climbing. The Afar region held a large lake, and its shorelines and wooded margins supported a fauna of elephants, giraffids, hippos and antelope alongside hominin populations that probably numbered in the thousands rather than millions. Fire was not in use. Nothing recognisable as cooking, storage or agriculture existed anywhere on earth, and would not for millions of years.
