Reconstruction
Madjedbebe is a sandstone rockshelter in Mirarr Country, at the foot of an outlier of western Arnhem Land’s escarpment. Excavations there uncovered a dense early occupation layer containing more than 10,000 artefacts, hearth material, ground ochre, grinding stones and ground-edge hatchet heads. Optically stimulated luminescence dating placed the beginning of this phase at about 65,000 years ago and its end near 53,000 years ago, although the earliest part of that chronology remains debated among archaeologists.
Food debris gives this occupation an unusual human texture. More than 1,000 non-wood plant fragments were recovered from the early phase, including material from a hearth. Researchers identified charred remains of Buchanania fruit, Australian canarium nuts, pandanus, Persoonia falcata fruit and Terminalia, alongside palm stem and several types of underground storage organ. Some identifications reach only family or broad anatomical category, and not every charred fragment must necessarily represent food. Nevertheless, the diversity of edible plants, their concentration in occupation deposits and the preservation of fragile storage-organ tissues provide strong evidence that people gathered, prepared and discarded plant foods here.
The remains indicate several levels of culinary effort. Fruits and some nuts could have been eaten with little treatment. Canarium kernels could be released by striking their shells, while extracting the small, nutritious kernels from fibrous pandanus drupes required considerably more pounding. Charred peel-like tissues suggest that underground organs were cooked and peeled near hearths. Palm stems were probably cooked, with their pith then pounded, but this sequence is a scholarly reconstruction informed by plant anatomy and Indigenous ethnobotanical knowledge rather than a directly preserved recipe.
Grinding stones add another dimension. Microscopic wear and residues on tools from the early phase are consistent with processing plants, including seeds, although no edible seed was recovered from that phase’s macrofossil assemblage. The implements were multifunctional: people also ground ochre, maintained ground-edge hatchets and worked other materials. Food processing therefore belonged to a broader technical system rather than a single specialized industry.
Madjedbebe matters because it contradicts any simple picture of Australia’s earliest inhabitants living only on easily collected coastal foods or hunted meat. The evidence instead supports flexible foraging across woodland, monsoon-forest and aquatic habitats, combining immediately edible fruits with foods demanding learned, multi-stage preparation. Later and present-day Aboriginal plant-food practices can help archaeologists interpret these traces, but they do not prove that one unchanged recipe survived for 65,000 years. The defensible continuity is broader: detailed ecological knowledge, cooking, pounding and grinding have remained important ways of turning northern Australian plants into food.
Historical context
Lower sea levels joined Australia and New Guinea within the continent of Sahul, although reaching Sahul from Southeast Asia still required sea crossings through Wallacea. During Madjedbebe’s early occupation phase, the site may have stood roughly 300 kilometres from the nearest coastline, making this an inland rather than coastal food record. Conditions were generally cooler and relatively dry, while open forest, woodland, patches of monsoon vine forest and aquatic habitats supplied varied plant resources. Farming and domesticated crops did not exist in Australia; food came from foraging, hunting and landscape knowledge. The occupation belongs to the wider, still-debated dispersal of Homo sapiens across southern Asia and into Sahul.
