Mohenjo-daro Households

At Mohenjo-daro, household foodways are visible not through recipes or written menus, but through architecture, tools, charred plants and discarded bones. During the city’s principal urban phase, approximately 2600–1900 BCE, densely connected brick residences stood beside lanes, drains and public or private wells. Many houses were organized around courtyards, and excavators identified hearths and multipurpose work areas within domestic buildings. Michael Jansen estimated that the city was served by more than 700 wells, although not every household possessed one. This unusually extensive water infrastructure supported drinking, washing, cooking and the cleaning of vessels in a crowded settlement.

The best-attested crops from Mohenjo-daro are wheat and barley. Their apparent dominance must be treated cautiously: early twentieth-century excavators collected conspicuous grains by hand rather than recovering plant remains systematically through flotation. Small seeds, including millets, could therefore have been missed. Even so, wheat and barley fit the broader pattern of winter-cereal agriculture in the Indus basin. Rural farmers supplied grain to urban consumers, but exactly how harvests were exchanged, taxed or distributed remains unknown because the Indus inscriptions have not been deciphered.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

Grinding stones indicate that grain was reduced to meal or flour, while pottery and hearths provided equipment for heating food. Porridges, grain stews and unleavened breads are reasonable reconstructions, but no preserved Mohenjo-daro dish securely distinguishes among them. Large jars could store grain, liquids or other commodities, yet their contents cannot normally be identified from shape alone. Wells near domestic activity areas would have made soaking grain, boiling ingredients and washing utensils practical parts of everyday work.

Animal remains add another dimension. The early faunal report identified cattle, buffalo, sheep or goats, pigs, fish, turtles and crocodilians among the site’s bones. Burning or cutting on some remains supports consumption, although individual species identifications made from fragile, fragmentary material deserve modern reassessment. The evidence establishes a mixed food economy involving livestock and aquatic resources, but it does not show that every household ate these foods equally or frequently. Dairy use is plausible from broader Indus evidence, though it has not been demonstrated directly for Mohenjo-daro vessels.

These households matter because they shift attention from monuments to daily provisioning. Water access, grinding, storage, cooking and waste removal were integrated into an urban landscape rather than confined to a palace or temple complex. Wheat foods, dairy products, pulses and river fish remain important across the region today, but broad continuity of ingredients is not proof that any modern Sindhi recipe descends unchanged from Mohenjo-daro. The defensible legacy is a durable regional reliance on cereals, livestock and riverine resources, transformed repeatedly over four millennia.

Historical context

The Mature Indus cultural sphere extended across roughly one to 1.5 million square kilometres of present-day Pakistan, north-western India and adjoining regions, although it was not necessarily a single centralized state. Mohenjo-daro flourished while pyramids were being built in Old Kingdom Egypt and while Mesopotamia passed through the Early Dynastic, Akkadian and Ur III periods. Goods and raw materials circulated over hundreds of kilometres within the Indus sphere and through Persian Gulf exchange networks. The city stood on the Indus floodplain, where fertile alluvium favored agriculture but shifting channels and floods demanded substantial building platforms and continual maintenance.

Archaeological

StrongExcavated brick houses, courtyards, hearths, wells, drains, pottery and grinding equipment directly document domestic infrastructure and food-related activity areas.

Archaeobotanical

ModerateCarbonized wheat and barley were reported from Mohenjo-daro, but early excavations relied on hand collection rather than systematic flotation, creating substantial recovery bias against small seeds.

Zooarchaeological

ModerateAnimal and fish remains directly support exploitation of terrestrial and aquatic fauna. The assemblage was fragmentary, and some identifications in the 1931 report require caution under modern taxonomic standards.

Written sources

LimitedIndus inscriptions remain undeciphered and provide no readable recipes, household accounts or food lists. Mesopotamian references illuminate external exchange but not specific meals at Mohenjo-daro.

Historical interpretation

InterpretiveConnections among household water access, food preparation and civic organization are scholarly interpretations. The political institutions responsible for maintaining this infrastructure remain debated.

Visual reconstruction

LimitedGround plans and surviving walls constrain reconstructions, but roofs, furnishings, food placement, household composition and the appearance of meals remain incompletely known.
