Monte Verde Settlers

Beside Chinchihuapi Creek in southern Chile, waterlogged sediments preserved an archaeological assemblage rarely encountered at such an early site. Excavators at Monte Verde II documented wooden structural elements, stakes, reed cordage, hearths, clay-lined braziers, stone and wooden implements, footprints, animal tissues, and abundant plant remains. Under the long-standing chronology, the principal occupation dates to about 14,550–14,500 calibrated years before present, approximately 12,600–12,550 BCE. A 2026 study instead argued that the archaeological component cannot be older than about 8,200 years before present, but the original investigators and other specialists have strongly disputed its stratigraphic interpretation. Monte Verde's precise age must therefore now be described as actively contested rather than settled.

The recovered foods portray broad-spectrum foraging rather than dependence on one large animal. Researchers reported tubers, seeds, nuts, berries, fruits, freshwater plants, fungi, and marine algae. Small tuber fragments were historically assigned to the wild potato Solanum maglia, although later work has questioned whether starch morphology can securely identify them to a single species. The remains demonstrate tuber use more confidently than they establish the exact potato species, and they provide no evidence that potatoes were cultivated.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

At least nine identified marine-algae species came from hearths, floors, and chewed plant masses. These included forms identified as cochayuyo, luche, pelillo, and related seaweeds gathered from coastal or estuarine habitats. Some specimens were directly radiocarbon dated to roughly 14,220–13,980 calibrated years before present under the established chronology. Their presence far inland indicates either purposeful travel or movement through social exchange, although archaeology cannot determine which mechanism operated.

Animal remains attributed to gomphotheres, extinct elephant relatives, and a palaeolama were associated with interpreted butchery and hide-working areas. Hearths establish controlled fire use, while wooden mortars and grinding stones indicate plant processing. Beyond this, exact recipes remain unknown: roasting, boiling, mixing, or medicinal preparation may be reasonable reconstructions in particular cases, not direct observations.

Monte Verde became historically significant because its pre-Clovis interpretation helped overturn the once-dominant claim that Clovis represented the first settlement of the Americas. The food evidence also shifted attention from a stereotype of specialized big-game hunters toward knowledgeable use of wetlands, forests, mountains, and coasts. Cochayuyo and luche remain foods in Chile, while potatoes became globally important after much later domestication in the Andes. These modern parallels are defensible ingredient connections, not proof of uninterrupted culinary traditions extending from Monte Verde.

Historical context

Under Monte Verde II's long-standing chronology of about 14,550–14,500 calibrated years before present, the last Ice Age was ending and sea level remained substantially below its modern position. The Pacific shoreline west of Monte Verde was farther away than it is today, yet coastal seaweeds reached the inland settlement. Clovis technology appeared in North America roughly 13,050–12,750 calibrated years before present, about a millennium or more later. Southern Chile contained cool wetlands and temperate forest mosaics rather than farms or permanent towns; all identified Monte Verde plant foods were wild resources. A 2026 publication has challenged the site's Late Pleistocene age, making this broader chronological placement an active scholarly dispute.

Evidence

Archaeological

StrongExcavations documented wooden structural elements, stakes, cordage, hearth-related features, tools, footprints, and organic remains in a waterlogged context. The existence of the assemblage is direct evidence, although its age and site-formation history are now disputed.

Archaeobotanical

StrongNumerous preserved terrestrial plants, tubers, seeds, fruits, nuts, and marine algae were recovered. Identification is strongest at broad food-category and, for several seaweeds, taxonomic levels.

Zooarchaeological

ModerateGomphothere and palaeolama remains, including reported soft tissue, were associated with activity areas interpreted as butchery and hide processing. Human use is supported by context but some behavioral details remain interpretive.

Food identification

ModerateMarine algae and broad categories of gathered plant foods are well supported. The traditional identification of the tubers specifically as Solanum maglia is less secure because diagnostic starch-grain criteria have been questioned.

Dating

LimitedMultiple earlier radiocarbon and sediment studies placed Monte Verde II near 14,500 calibrated years before present. A 2026 independent study proposed a Middle Holocene age of no more than about 8,200 years before present; detailed rebuttals dispute its tephra, stratigraphic, and redeposition arguments. The disagreement is unresolved.

Preparation method

LimitedHearths, clay-lined braziers, wooden mortars, grinding stones, and food remains directly support heating and mechanical plant processing in general. Particular recipes and cooking sequences cannot be reconstructed securely.

Geographic attribution

StrongThe archaeological complex is securely located beside Chinchihuapi Creek near Puerto Montt in Chile's Los Lagos Region.

Historical interpretation

LimitedMonte Verde's role as decisive pre-Clovis evidence was widely accepted after extended review, but the 2026 chronological challenge has reopened the issue. Coastal mobility and year-round residence remain scholarly interpretations rather than direct observations.

Visual reconstruction

InterpretiveWooden frames, stakes, cordage, floor deposits, and hide traces constrain reconstructions of covered structures, but wall height, roof form, appearance, clothing, serving vessels, and complete activity scenes are not directly preserved.
