MRD, catalogued MRD-VP-1/1, is a near-complete cranium of Australopithecus anamensis found at Woranso-Mille in Ethiopia's Afar region in February 2016 and dated to about 3.8 million years ago. Volcanic layers around the find gave the date. Before it, the species was known essentially from jaws and teeth, so a whole braincase and face changed what could be said about it. For food history the value is in the chewing apparatus. Teeth and jaws are the most direct evidence any fossil offers about diet, and anamensis has robust ones. The dietary reconstruction that follows is a forager of open country: seeds, sedges and grasses, together with fruits and tubers, and teeth capable of hard, resistant items such as nuts. That is a plant-based diet with the mechanical range to handle food that resists. The significance lies in what such a diet does not require. There are no stone tools at 3.8 million years, no fire, no containers. Everything in that list can be gathered by hand and processed by teeth, or at most by pounding between stones. Sedges and tubers in particular are worth noticing because they are underground storage organs, available in dry seasons when fruit has gone, and reachable by digging rather than climbing. A forager who can exploit them has a buffer against seasonal shortage, and the isotopic evidence for grasses and sedges in later australopithecines suggests that buffer was being used across the group. The find also complicated the story it was expected to simplify. MRD and other Afar fossils indicate that anamensis and afarensis, Lucy's species, overlapped for roughly a hundred thousand years. That undercuts the tidy picture of one species turning into the next and replaces it with coexistence, which for the food record means two hominin populations working the same landscapes and presumably the same resources at the same time. Competition for food between closely related hominins becomes a live question rather than a hypothetical one, and one that dental evidence alone cannot settle, since similar teeth do not prove identical menus. Whether the two divided the landscape by habitat, by season or by food type is unresolved. What MRD contributes, then, is a face and a palate for the earliest well-known Australopithecus, and evidence that the lineage leading toward systematic tool use and eventually cooking was already committed to a broad, mechanically demanding plant diet more than three and a half million years before either.

Historical context

About 3.8 million years ago, the hominin record is confined to Africa and consists almost entirely of teeth, jaws and fragmentary limb bones. No stone tools are known anywhere, fire is unused, and the earliest claimed butchery marks lie some 400,000 years in the future. The Woranso-Mille area held a shallow lake fringed by woodland, with grassland beyond it. Elephants, rhinoceros, antelope, pigs and monkeys shared the landscape. Global temperatures were warmer than today and the Sahara was not yet the barrier it would become.
