Reconstruction
Gorham's Cave and Vanguard Cave sit at the foot of the Rock of Gibraltar on Governor's Beach, and together they hold some of the clearest evidence that Neanderthals worked the sea. The case was published in 2008 and rests on two kinds of deposit. At Gorham's, an occupation level is dominated by mussels of a single species, Mytilus galloprovincialis, probably collected from a nearby estuarine source. The shells lie with a hearth and a concentration of knapping debris and Mousterian stone tools. That association is what makes the deposit meaningful rather than incidental: shellfish were carried to a specific place, processed beside a fire, eaten and discarded where tools were being made. Vanguard Cave broadens the menu considerably, with molluscs joined by seal, dolphin and fish. The marine mammals are the more revealing component. Monk seals haul out on predictable beaches to breed and to moult, which makes them accessible to anyone who knows the season and the place, and requires no pursuit at sea. Dolphins strand, and a stranded dolphin is a very large quantity of meat and fat available to whoever finds it first. Neither implies boats or nets. Both imply knowledge — of where animals congregate, when they do it, and what is worth walking to. The published interpretation makes precisely that point, finding indications that these Neanderthals understood the geographic distribution and behaviour of their prey. The significance is partly corrective. Coastal and marine foraging has often been treated as a signature of modern human behavioural sophistication, part of an argument that Homo sapiens expanded their diet in ways Neanderthals could not. The Gibraltar evidence undercuts that, and the authors note comparable traces from Italian sites, so this is not one unusual population improvising in isolation. Read across marine isotope stages 5 to 3, the use of marine resources looks like a normal part of the repertoire rather than a rarity. Nutritionally, coastal foods matter for the same reasons they mattered at Koobi Fora nearly two million years earlier. Shellfish are reliable, stationary and safe to gather, available to anyone regardless of strength or speed. Marine mammals carry fat in quantities terrestrial game rarely matches, and fat is the limiting nutrient in cold-climate foraging. A population with access to a productive shoreline has a buffer that inland groups lack. What the Gibraltar caves supply is not a spectacular single find but the accumulated ordinary residue of that buffer being used: shells around a hearth, seal bone in a cave, repeated over long occupations at the southern edge of Neanderthal Europe.
Historical context
In the range of roughly 125,000 to 40,000 years ago, Neanderthals held Europe and western Asia while modern humans were established in Africa and expanding into the Levant. Mousterian stone technology, hafted spears and controlled fire were standard. Gibraltar sat at the continent's southern tip, and with sea levels lower than today a coastal plain stretched out beyond the present shoreline, offering estuaries, dunes and beaches where monk seals bred. Neither boats nor fishing nets are evidenced for these populations.

Limitations

Marine mammal remains show consumption, not hunting. Monk seals hauling out and stranded dolphins are both obtainable without pursuit at sea, and no boats or nets are evidenced for these populations. Describing this as Neanderthal sea hunting would overstate it.
