Reconstruction
At the northern edge of Borneo’s Gunung Subis limestone massif, people repeatedly used the enormous entrances of the Niah Caves during the Late Pleistocene. Modern investigations of the West Mouth place human activity there at least about 45,000–50,000 years ago. The deposits do not demonstrate uninterrupted residence by one population. Instead, they preserve episodes of camping, food processing, toolmaking, burial, and other activity within a changing landscape that always included tropical forest but was sometimes more varied than the rainforest surrounding Niah today.
Food remains show that these foragers did not survive on meat alone. Starch grains and plant tissues recovered from archaeological sediments and stone tools identify rainforest carbohydrates, including yams, aroids and palm pith interpreted as sago. Nuts and other plant remains occur in later levels. Some aroids and yams contain irritants or toxins, so their consumption probably required peeling, pounding, soaking or cooking, although the exact Niah recipes cannot be reconstructed. Charring provides direct evidence that at least some plant material encountered fire; it does not establish a single cooking method.
Animal bones and shells document hunting, fishing and collecting across several habitats. Bearded pig became especially important, while primates, deer, porcupines, turtles, fish and molluscs were also exploited. At Lobang Hangus, a cave entrance in the same complex, the composition and age profiles of prey suggest selective hunting rather than indiscriminate scavenging. Bone points, worked stingray spines, surviving hafting adhesive and fibre bindings show that Terminal Pleistocene and Early Holocene people manufactured composite implements. Researchers interpret these as probable fishing leisters, projectile points or components of traps, but individual weapons cannot always be tied to particular animal bones.
Niah therefore records a flexible food system linking forest floor, canopy, rivers, wetlands and coastal or brackish environments. People carried carcasses and gathered foods back to cave camps, butchered animals, maintained fires and processed difficult plant resources. Early Holocene evidence indicates continued reliance on bearded pig, rainforest plants, turtles and molluscs. Burning near forest openings may have encouraged useful plants and pig-attracting vegetation, but deliberate landscape management remains an archaeological interpretation rather than a directly observed practice.
The importance of Niah lies partly in overturning an older assumption that humid tropical forests were barriers or nutritionally inadequate for early Homo sapiens. Its exceptional organic preservation reveals detailed ecological knowledge, specialized equipment and broad diets. No modern Bornean dish can be traced directly to these Pleistocene meals. The defensible connection is broader: yams, sago, wild meat, fish and molluscs remain recognizable components of regional food traditions, while Niah demonstrates that people have engaged intelligently with Borneo’s forests for tens of thousands of years.
Historical context
Global climate repeatedly shifted through the later Ice Age. During the Last Glacial Maximum, about 26,000–20,000 years ago, sea level fell roughly 120 metres below its present position, exposing much of the Sunda Shelf and joining Borneo to a larger Southeast Asian landmass. Niah stood within a mosaic of rainforest, open vegetation, rivers and wetlands rather than beside the modern coastline. Homo sapiens had already dispersed through much of southern Asia and reached Sahul, while agriculture, pottery and cities remained thousands of years in the future.

StrongLarge studied faunal assemblages document exploitation of bearded pig and diverse terrestrial, arboreal and aquatic animals. Assemblage structure and prey ages support selective hunting in some phases.

StrongHafting mastic and fibrous binding preserved on bone points and worked stingray spines directly demonstrate composite-tool construction, though their exact use remains partly inferred.

ModerateAnimal taxa are often identifiable from bones and shells, while microscopic plant evidence securely establishes starchy plant use but permits varying levels of taxonomic precision.
Dating
StrongAMS radiocarbon dating, uranium-series analysis and reconstructed stratigraphy support Late Pleistocene human activity, although the precise beginning of the sequence and conversion between BP and BCE require caution.
Preparation method
ProbableCharred remains demonstrate exposure to fire, and potentially toxic tubers would have required processing. Specific techniques such as soaking, pounding or roasting are reasonable reconstructions rather than directly observed recipes.

Recent authoritative synthesis describes human interaction with the Niah rainforest from at least about 50,000 years ago, while the 2007 chronostratigraphic study established occupation earlier than approximately 46,000 calibrated years BP.
