Reconstruction
Nyayanga sits on the Homa Peninsula on the Kenyan shore of Lake Victoria, and its deposits date between roughly 3.03 and 2.58 million years ago. Published in 2023, the site delivered three findings that matter to the food record, and a fourth that complicates all of them. The first is the toolkit. The stone artefacts are Oldowan, the industry of struck flakes and worked cores that dominates early archaeology, and these are the oldest examples of it yet recovered. They also extend the known distribution of that toolkit by more than 1,300 kilometres, which changes the Oldowan from a regional development into something already widespread at its earliest known date. The second is the butchery. Two hippopotamid butchery sites were identified, with the animals processed where they lay in a landscape of mosaic vegetation and a fauna dominated by C4 grazers. This is the oldest evidence anywhere of hominins consuming very large animals. A hippo carcass is a substantial problem: the hide resists any tooth, and the meat and marrow inside are inaccessible without a cutting edge and something heavy to break bone. The flakes and hammerstones at Nyayanga are the solution, and their presence with the carcasses is direct rather than inferred. The third finding is that this was not a meat-only technology. The same assemblage carries evidence of pounding plant material, so the earliest Oldowan toolkit was already general-purpose, applied to tubers or seeds as readily as to carcasses. That matters because it undercuts a tidy narrative in which stone tools arrive as a hunting or scavenging adaptation. They arrive as a processing adaptation, and processing applies to whatever resists teeth. The complication is who was responsible. Two large, peg-shaped molars from the site belong to Paranthropus and are the oldest fossils of that genus known. Paranthropus is conventionally cast as a big-jawed, small-brained side branch, a chewer rather than a toolmaker, and its presence here does not prove it knapped anything. But it is the hominin actually represented at the site, and the authors are explicit that ruling it out would be unwise. The honest position is that the oldest Oldowan assemblage cannot currently be assigned to a maker, and the long-standing assumption that stone tools track our own lineage is weaker than it looked. Taken with the older but cruder assemblage at Lomekwi, the picture is of stone technology emerging more than once, or spreading further and earlier, than a single-origin account allows.
Historical context
Close to 2.9 million years ago, several hominin lineages shared eastern Africa, including early Paranthropus and probably late Australopithecus, with the genus Homo not yet clearly established. Fire was unused. The Homa Peninsula carried mixed woodland and grassland beside a large lake, with hippopotamus, elephant and grazing antelope in numbers. No hominin had left Africa. Nothing resembling a container, a hearth or a store existed anywhere.
