Peiligang Millet Farmers

Reconstruction

Between roughly 7000 and 5000 BCE, communities across central Henan built permanent or repeatedly occupied settlements whose pottery, houses, burials and stone tools are grouped by archaeologists under the name Peiligang culture. The name comes from the Peiligang site near Xinzheng, but the archaeological pattern extended beyond that village into several landscapes between the middle Yellow River and upper Huai drainage. Excavations have uncovered semi-subterranean houses, cemeteries, pottery kilns and numerous pits, some reasonably interpreted as storage facilities. These remains signal growing investment in settled life, although they do not prove that every household depended primarily on farming.

Millet was important, but “millet farmers” is best understood as a shorthand rather than a complete description. At Tanghu, a large Peiligang settlement south of Zhengzhou, phytoliths from houses and pits provide evidence for cultivated broomcorn millet by about 5800 BCE. Rice phytoliths also occurred there, suggesting that some communities combined dryland millet with rice where local water conditions permitted. Peiligang-affiliated Jiahu followed a different pattern: rice, acorns, water caltrop, lotus, fish and shellfish indicate a wetland-oriented economy in which gathering, fishing and hunting remained substantial. Early agriculture in the region was therefore a mosaic rather than a uniform millet monoculture.

Spot something wrong in this reconstruction?

Grinding slabs and handstones reveal how plant foods entered daily meals. Microwear and starch analyses from Tanghu indicate that cereals were dry-ground, probably with hides placed beneath the slabs to catch the meal. Acorns and underground storage organs were processed too. Earlier work on grinding tools from Shigu and Egou likewise found evidence of varied plant use. The resulting cereal meal could have been mixed with water and cooked in pottery, but particular dishes such as porridge cannot be identified directly unless residues or preserved food establish them. Pottery suitable for boiling makes such preparation plausible, not observed fact.

Cultivation required clearing, sowing, harvesting, processing and protecting seed or food stores. Millet’s relatively short growing season and tolerance of limited rainfall made it useful in northern China, while storage helped bridge harvests and seasonal shortages. Yet farming added to rather than immediately replaced older subsistence practices. Wild nuts, roots, game, fish and managed animals continued to reduce dependence on a single crop.

Peiligang communities belong to the prolonged formation of northern Chinese agriculture. Later Neolithic societies became more dependent on millet, especially foxtail millet, and supported larger populations and denser settlements. Millet remains part of Chinese foodways today in porridges, steamed grains and other preparations. Those modern foods demonstrate the crop’s durability, but an unchanged culinary lineage from a particular Peiligang meal cannot currently be proved.

Historical context

Central Henan contained networks of modest Neolithic settlements rather than cities or states. Tanghu’s archaeological complex covered about 20 hectares, although its excavated Peiligang occupation was only part of that area; dozens of semi-subterranean houses and hundreds of pits have been reported. Jiahu covered approximately 5 hectares and connected the upper Huai wetlands with communities farther north. Elsewhere, Southwest Asian villages were already cultivating wheat and barley and managing livestock, while communities in the Yangtze basin were developing increasingly intensive relationships with rice. Agriculture was emerging through several independent regional trajectories rather than spreading from a single global center.

Archaeological

StrongExcavated Peiligang-culture sites contain houses, pits, burials, pottery and ground-stone tools that directly support reconstruction of settled communities and organized food-processing activities.

Archaeobotanical

ModeratePhytoliths at Tanghu support broomcorn millet and rice cultivation, while charred plant assemblages from Jiahu document rice and numerous gathered plants. Macrobotanical crop preservation is poor or uneven at many other Peiligang sites.

Residue chemical

StrongStarch residues and microwear on grinding tools directly indicate processing of cereals and, at some sites, acorns and underground storage organs. These analyses identify processed plant categories more securely than they identify finished dishes.

Zooarchaeological

ModerateAnimal remains, especially the well-studied assemblage from Jiahu, support continued fishing, hunting and the presence of dogs and pigs, although the status and dietary importance of early managed pigs vary by site and study.

Food identification

ModerateBroomcorn millet is supported at Tanghu by diagnostic phytolith analysis, but the crop composition and degree of agricultural dependence cannot be generalized uniformly across the entire Peiligang cultural region.

Dating

ModerateThe broad 7000–5000 BCE range is a conventional culture-level chronology. Individual settlements and phases occupy narrower and sometimes differently calibrated intervals.

Preparation method

ProbableMicrowear supports dry grinding of cereal at Tanghu. Cooking ground meal with water is a reasonable reconstruction given the pottery assemblage, but no particular millet porridge or other finished recipe has been directly identified.

Geographic attribution

ModeratePeiligang is the type site near Xinzheng, but the cultural grouping spans multiple parts of central Henan, including locations associated with both the middle Yellow River and upper Huai drainage systems.

Historical interpretation

ModerateThe evidence supports a gradual transition toward cultivation and sedentism. Describing all Peiligang people as specialized millet farmers would exceed the evidence because subsistence remained diverse and differed substantially between sites.

Visual reconstruction

InterpretiveGround grain, storage activity and cooking in pottery can be reconstructed generally, but vessel contents, serving practices, clothing, field appearance and household arrangements require interpretation.
