Reconstruction
At Pinnacle Point, a line of caves and rock shelters near present-day Mossel Bay preserves repeated visits by Middle Stone Age foragers. Cave PP13B records occupation episodes around 162,000, 125,000, 110,000, and 99,000–91,000 years ago. Its oldest deposits contain marine shells carried from the shore, demonstrating purposeful use of intertidal foods during a predominantly glacial period. The evidence does not reveal a permanent coastal settlement or the size of the groups involved; it records intermittent occupations whose intensity changed with climate, sea level, and the distance to the ocean.
Fifteen categories of marine invertebrates were identified in the original PP13B study. Brown mussels were dominant, followed by giant periwinkles and limpets, with smaller quantities of black mussels, white mussels, whelks, chitons, and other shore animals. Their habitats show that collectors visited rocky intertidal zones and, when available, sandy beaches. These foods could be gathered predictably at low tide, but successful collection still required knowledge of tides, shoreline terrain, and where particular species lived. Shell abundance was comparatively low in the earliest occupation, so “systematic” is best understood as deliberate and repeated use rather than intensive midden accumulation.
The shells were transported to the cave and discarded there after the edible tissues were removed. Archaeology does not establish whether the mollusks were eaten raw, opened over a fire, roasted, or cooked by another method. Hearth-related evidence demonstrates fire use at Pinnacle Point, but no direct association proves a particular shellfish recipe. Terrestrial animal remains broaden the dietary record, while proposed reliance on edible Cape underground plants is a scholarly reconstruction supported by regional ecology and plant microremains rather than a complete list of identified meals.
Pinnacle Point also documents experiments with silcrete, a stone whose flaking properties can be improved by controlled heating. A few artifacts from PP13B have been interpreted as evidence that heat treatment appeared by about 164,000 years ago, although that earliest claim is less secure than the abundant evidence from nearby PP5-6. By approximately 72,000–60,000 years ago, heating silcrete before knapping was common there. Experiments and mineral analyses indicate that heating altered the rock and permitted more efficient production of sharp flakes and small tools, potentially useful in hunting and carcass processing, though particular tools cannot automatically be assigned to food procurement.
Pinnacle Point matters because it joins subsistence evidence with technological planning across an exceptionally long sequence. Coastal foods offered a concentrated resource when accessible, while engineered stone shows deliberate transformation of raw material. Neither practice can be traced as an unbroken tradition to modern cuisine. Nevertheless, shellfish gathering remains a major southern African food practice, and the site demonstrates that humans were incorporating intertidal foods into flexible diets far earlier than once recognized.
Historical context
Southern Africa passed from the cool, generally dry Marine Isotope Stage 6 into the warmer Last Interglacial and then renewed glacial conditions. Sea level repeatedly shifted, moving the shoreline toward or away from the Pinnacle Point caves; during the earliest PP13B occupation, the coast may have been roughly 5–6 kilometers away. There were no farms, towns, pottery, or metalworking. Small mobile populations lived by hunting and gathering, while occupation of PP13B was episodic rather than continuous. A dune sealed that cave around 90,000 years ago, after which the local archaeological sequence continued at PP5-6.
