Reconstruction
Selam is the skeleton of an Australopithecus afarensis child, catalogued DIK-1-1 and recovered from the Dikika deposits of Ethiopia's Afar region. She died at roughly three years old, some 3.3 million years ago, and her remains are the most complete for a juvenile of the species. Her importance to food history comes less from the skeleton than from what was found a few hundred metres away in the same deposits. Two animal bones, the rib of a cow-sized creature and the thighbone of one about the size of a goat, carry twelve marks that were reported in 2010 as evidence of stone-tool butchery at or before 3.39 million years ago. If that reading holds, it pushes deliberate access to meat and marrow back by roughly 800,000 years, and it does so at a date when no manufactured stone tools are known. The implication is not a toolmaking industry but opportunism: sharp-edged stones picked up unmodified, used to cut flesh from a carcass and to crack bone for the marrow inside. Marrow matters nutritionally in a way that lean meat does not, being dense in fat and available from carcasses that scavengers have already stripped. The claim has been contested for over a decade, and honestly so. One team argued the marks came from trampling, animals treading bones into grit, pointing to micro-abrasions and intersecting striations they read as incompatible with cutting. Crocodile feeding has also been proposed, since crocodilian teeth can leave grooves that resemble tool marks. A statistical reanalysis in 2015 concluded that trampling did not explain the marks and that butchery with stone tools remained the best available match, describing the twelve marks as a combination of cutting and percussion. That is where the evidence stands: the butchery reading is currently favoured, not settled, and comparative work on bone surface modification continues. What the card properly records is therefore a contested threshold rather than an established one. Its significance for the food record is that the boundary between plant-dominated foraging and the systematic use of animal tissue may lie in the range of Selam's own species, before the anatomical changes and the tool industries usually credited with the shift. Every later development that depends on butchery, from marrow extraction to the cooked-meat diets of Homo, would rest on a capability first glimpsed here, in marks on two bones whose interpretation the field has not finished arguing about.
Historical context
Around 3.3 million years ago, hominins were confined to Africa and no manufactured stone-tool industry is known: the oldest flaked assemblages, from Lomekwi, come several hundred thousand years later. The Dikika landscape was a river floodplain grading into wooded margins, sharing its fauna with hippos, crocodiles, elephants and antelope. Fire was unknown, as were containers, storage and any form of cultivation. Infant mortality of the kind Selam's own death represents would have been the ordinary condition of every hominin population on earth.

LimitedAnimal tissue and marrow are inferred from the marks' placement. Nothing identifies the taxa consumed beyond the size classes of the two marked bones, and nothing associates the bones with Selam as an individual.

The card's food significance rests on the Dikika cut-marked bones, whose interpretation has been disputed for over a decade. Trampling and crocodilian feeding were both proposed; a 2015 reanalysis favoured butchery but did not close the question. Any presentation of this as the established origin of butchery would overstate the evidence.
