Reconstruction
The Taung Child is the skull of a juvenile Australopithecus africanus, recovered from a lime quarry at Taung in South Africa and described in 1925 as the holotype of the species. It was the first australopithecine ever found, and it moved the search for human origins to Africa. Its place in a food history is unusual, because the best-supported story about this individual is not what it ate but what ate it. Damage to the skull and around the eye sockets closely matches the marks left by modern crowned eagles on monkeys they have killed and consumed, documented from the Tai Forest in Ivory Coast. On that reading a large raptor killed the child and fed on the body, which explains both the injuries and how a small skull came to rest in a cave deposit at all. It is a reminder that early hominins were prey as often as predators, and that the pressure shaping foraging behaviour ran in both directions. Diet for the species is reconstructed from tooth enamel chemistry rather than from this specimen's stomach. Carbon isotopes distinguish C3 plants, the trees and shrubs and their fruits, from C4 plants, the tropical grasses and sedges of open ground, and africanus enamel records a highly mixed and variable signal across individuals and sites. That variability is itself the finding. Some individuals drew heavily on woodland resources, others on open-country plants or the animals grazing there, and the same species accommodated both. A forager with that range is buffered against the failure of any single resource, which matters in a seasonal southern African landscape where fruit and water are not reliably available together. Nothing at Taung indicates tools or fire. Processing means teeth, hands and stones, and the plant-heavy omnivory the card describes is a diet assembled by gathering rather than by technology. The significance for later food history lies in that dietary breadth appearing in a second lineage, in a different part of Africa, from the East African australopithecines. Whatever selected for a flexible, mixed diet was acting across the group rather than in one region, and the capacity to move between woodland and grassland foods is the inheritance that later hominins would extend with tools, then with fire, and eventually with cultivation of the very grasses that show up in this enamel as a C4 signal.
Historical context
In the range of roughly 2.8 to 2.0 million years ago, no securely dated stone-tool industry exists in southern Africa and fire is unused. The Taung landscape was open grassland with wooded valleys and limestone caves, home to crowned eagles, leopards, hyaenas and sabre-toothed cats, all of which preyed on primates. Hominins were confined to Africa. Populations were small and dispersed, and their principal daily problems were finding water, finding plant food, and not being eaten.
