Reconstruction
Wonderwerk Cave, in South Africa's Northern Cape, holds the oldest secure evidence for burning in an archaeological context, and the case rests on a subtle argument about how particles behave. Micromorphology and Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy applied to intact sediments in the Acheulean strata found ashed plant remains and burned bone fragments. Crucially, the bone fragments are angular and sharp-edged and the plant ashes are well preserved, and neither survives being transported by wind or water. Particles carried in from outside arrive rounded and degraded. These did not. The burning therefore happened inside the cave, roughly thirty metres from the entrance. That location does most of the interpretive work. A natural wildfire does not reach thirty metres into a cave, so a fire burning there was brought or made by something that walked in carrying it. The 2012 analysis dated the burning to approximately one million years ago, and it was published as the earliest secure archaeological evidence of fire use. Work published in 2026 has since extended the record substantially. Using a newly developed approach combining luminescence analysis with chemical testing on burned bone, a team reported evidence for fire use at the site between 1.07 and 1.79 million years ago, pushing the earliest traces several hundred thousand years deeper. The finding extends rather than replaces the earlier claim, and it makes Wonderwerk one of the oldest known locations for hominin fire use anywhere. The behaviour it implies is worth stating precisely. Deliberately bringing naturally occurring fire into a cave is not the same as making fire, and the distinction is not pedantic. Fire on the landscape is intermittently available after lightning strikes and bush fires; capturing it, keeping it alight and carrying it somewhere useful requires foresight and maintenance but no ignition technology at all. Firemaking is a later and separate achievement. For food, the consequences of even that lesser capability are large. Heat makes starch digestible and denatures protein, so cooked tubers and meat yield more energy for less chewing and less gut. It kills parasites and pathogens in flesh, which matters most for scavenged carcasses. It extends the day and it deters predators from an occupied cave. Whether Wonderwerk's hominins were cooking is not established by burned bone and plant ash alone, since a fire has uses beyond food, and burned bone can result from a fire lit on a surface where bones already lay. What the site establishes is the presence of controlled fire deep inside a shelter, more than a million years ago, in the hands of an Acheulean toolmaker.
Historical context
In the range of 1.8 to 1.0 million years ago, Homo erectus was spread across Africa and into Eurasia and Acheulean handaxe technology was in use. Fire was not yet a general possession of hominin populations; secure traces are rare and scattered, and firemaking as opposed to fire-keeping came later still. The Kalahari margin was drier grassland with seasonal water, inhabited by antelope, zebra, and large carnivores. Wonderwerk itself is a long horizontal cave, unusual in offering deep shelter that a natural fire could not reach.
