Reconstruction
Upper Cave at Zhoukoudian is not the famous Homo erectus deposit beneath it. It is a younger cavity near the summit of Dragon Bone Hill, about 50 kilometers southwest of central Beijing, where excavations directed by Pei Wenzhong in 1933–1934 uncovered partial skeletons of Homo sapiens, stone and bone tools, ochre, and numerous ornaments. Three comparatively complete skulls and other remains were concentrated between archaeological horizons. Pei interpreted some as burials, although disturbance by carnivores and burrowing animals makes the exact mortuary history uncertain.
Recent radiocarbon research has substantially revised the chronology. Animal bones assigned to the archaeological sequence indicate that its principal horizons are at least approximately 35,100–33,500 calibrated years old, while one ornament-rich horizon may date to about 38,300–35,800 years ago. These are not direct dates on the human fossils, and the association of some dated specimens with Pei’s layers was reconstructed from excavation records. The safest conclusion is therefore that the people and artifacts belong to the later Pleistocene, probably earlier than many twentieth-century estimates suggested.
Food evidence is less spectacular than the ornaments but still informative. The cave contained abundant animal remains, although some animals fell naturally into a deep recess and others were introduced by carnivores. A modern taphonomic study found cut marks and mortality patterns showing that people processed cervids—deer-family animals—inside the cave. Burned specimens probably reflect campfires, but they do not preserve a recognizable recipe. Fish vertebrae, including remains tentatively identified as carp, suggest a potentially broader resource spectrum, although their human consumption is less securely demonstrated than deer processing. No direct dietary isotope analysis has been published for the Upper Cave individuals, and preserved plant foods are absent.
The inhabitants also transformed animal materials into social objects. Perforated teeth from badger, fox, deer, marten, and tiger were joined by bone, shell, stone, and fish-bone ornaments. Microscopic study of rediscovered badger canines indicates that some had been sewn onto clothing and coated with ochre. Such objects document technical skill and visual communication, not diet; a pierced tooth could come from prey, scavenging, or exchange. An eyed bone needle provides further evidence for sewing.
Upper Cave therefore records mobile foragers who hunted or processed deer, used fire, made clothing, and expressed affiliations through ornaments. Nearby Tianyuan Cave provides direct isotopic evidence that another regional Homo sapiens individual consumed substantial freshwater fish around 40,000 years ago, while later northern Chinese sites preserve ground wild grasses, beans, and tubers. Together these discoveries reveal diverse Pleistocene food strategies. They do not establish a continuous line to any modern Beijing dish, but they show that northern China’s long culinary history began with flexible use of animals, aquatic resources, fire, and eventually intensive plant processing.
Historical context
Northern China was in Marine Isotope Stage 3, before the Last Glacial Maximum. Climate fluctuated repeatedly, and the Beijing region supported mosaics of steppe, woodland, and riverine habitats used by highly mobile, sparsely distributed foragers. Homo sapiens was present at nearby Tianyuan Cave by roughly 42,000–39,000 calibrated years ago. Across Eurasia, populations were producing personal ornaments, tailored clothing equipment, and increasingly varied stone and bone technologies. Upper Cave’s marine shells and nonlocal stone objects imply movement or exchange extending beyond the immediate limestone hills, although exact travel distances and routes remain uncertain.

StrongExcavation records document human remains, lithics, an eyed bone needle, ornaments, ochre, and faunal material within the Upper Cave sequence.
Zooarchaeological
ModerateCut marks and cervid mortality profiles support human processing of deer, but the surviving collection is biased by early excavation and curation, and part of the fauna accumulated through natural trapping or carnivore activity.
Residue chemical
StrongElectron microscopy, elemental analysis, and Raman analysis identified ochre residues on rediscovered perforated teeth. This supports pigment use on ornaments, not food preparation.
Written sources
StrongPei Wenzhong's contemporary excavation publication preserves essential descriptions, plans, stratigraphic observations, and illustrations, although excavation methods did not meet modern spatial-recording standards.
Iconographic
ModerateOriginal photographs, drawings, and casts permit reassessment of many ornaments lost during the Second World War, but they cannot replace examination of the missing objects.
Food identification
ModerateHuman processing of cervids is supported directly by bone modifications. Fish remains are present, but their status as consumed food is less secure, and no plant foods have been identified.
Dating
ModerateModern AMS radiocarbon measurements place principal archaeological layers at least around 35.1–33.5 ka cal BP and an ornament-rich layer around 38.3–35.8 ka cal BP. Dates are on associated fauna rather than directly on the human fossils, and reconstructed layer assignments introduce uncertainty.
Preparation method
LimitedCut marks demonstrate carcass processing, and burned bones probably relate largely to campfires, but specific cooking techniques or dishes cannot be reconstructed.
Geographic attribution
StrongUpper Cave, also designated Zhoukoudian Locality 26, is securely located on Dragon Bone Hill southwest of Beijing.
Historical interpretation
InterpretiveIntentional burial, long-distance population relationships, and the social meanings of ornaments are reasoned interpretations. The presence of Homo sapiens and symbolic artifacts does not by itself establish a discrete newly arrived population.
Visual reconstruction
LimitedClothing decorated with sewn teeth is supported for some ornaments, but garment forms, colors, hairstyles, food vessels, and the appearance of living spaces remain unknown.

AMS results place the principal archaeological layers minimally around 35.1–33.5 ka cal BP, approximately 33,150–31,550 BCE, with an ornament-rich lower horizon estimated around 38.3–35.8 ka cal BP, approximately 36,350–33,850 BCE. These dates remain indirect because they were obtained from associated animal bones.
