Aluminum Beverage Cans Reach Consumers

The aluminum beverage can did not arrive through one invention in one city. It emerged from experiments by brewers, metal producers, can manufacturers, and filling companies seeking a container lighter than steel and less fragile than glass. Hawaii Brewing Company packaged Primo beer in aluminum cans in 1958, but reported lining failures made that early venture commercially unsuccessful. Coors followed in Colorado in 1959 with a seven-ounce aluminum beer can; a surviving example in the Smithsonian documents that consumer product directly. This became the landmark successful introduction commonly associated with the aluminum can’s commercial arrival.

Richmond belongs to the story because it was the headquarters of Reynolds Metals Company, a major aluminum producer and packaging innovator. Reynolds established a Can Division in 1963 and, according to company records preserved by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, developed an all-aluminum twelve-ounce can that year. This standard-sized package helped move aluminum beyond a regional brewing experiment and into the expanding markets for canned beer and carbonated soft drinks. The transition was gradual: steel cans, aluminum ends, and all-aluminum bodies coexisted during the 1960s.

The decisive manufacturing advance was the seamless two-piece can. A circular aluminum blank was drawn into a shallow cup and forced through ironing dies that stretched and thinned its walls while leaving a stronger base. After trimming, washing, coating, printing, filling, and sealing, only a separate top had to be joined to the body. An internal lacquer was essential because beer and acidic soft drinks could otherwise interact with the metal. The domed base and sealed end also had to withstand pressure from carbonation.

For producers and distributors, aluminum reduced package weight while providing a stackable, shatter-resistant, light-blocking container. More beverages could be transported for a given package weight, and cans were well suited to supermarkets, vending machines, picnics, sporting events, and automobile travel. Consumers still needed a separate opener for many early cans, but easy-open ends appeared in the early 1960s. Their convenience accelerated adoption, although detachable tabs soon created litter and injury concerns.

The modern beverage can descends directly from this cluster of innovations. Its body remains a thin, drawn-and-ironed shell closed with a seamed top, although decades of engineering have reduced material use and replaced detachable tabs with retained stay-tabs. Aluminum’s scrap value also encouraged organized consumer recovery: Reynolds began pilot reclamation efforts later in the 1960s. The can consequently changed not the recipes of beer or soda, but their portability, distribution economics, retail presentation, and place in everyday eating and drinking.

Historical context

The United States was a rapidly suburbanizing country of about 179.3 million people, 18.5 percent more than in 1950. Richmond city had approximately 220,000 residents, while its surrounding metropolitan counties were growing quickly. Construction of the federally funded Interstate Highway System, authorized in 1956, was reshaping freight and automobile travel. Supermarkets, vending machines, household refrigerators, televised advertising, and packaged convenience foods were increasingly important parts of American consumption, creating favorable conditions for a lightweight, standardized, nationally distributed beverage container.
