Reconstruction
Pottery did not arrive in Japan as part of a farmer’s kitchen. It appeared among Late Pleistocene hunter-gatherers, initially in small quantities, while communities still relied on fishing, hunting and gathered plants. At Ōdai Yamamoto I in northern Honshū, charred material adhering to plain potsherds has produced dates extending to roughly 16,000 calibrated years before present, although the oldest limits and the nature of some deposits require caution. By about 15,000 to 11,800 years ago, ceramic vessels were present at sites distributed across the Japanese archipelago.
These containers created a durable setting in which water and food could be heated together. Jōmon pots were handmade rather than wheel-thrown and fired at comparatively low temperatures. Exact construction and firing practices varied, and complete early vessels are rare. Soot and carbonized crusts nevertheless show that many vessels encountered fire. Chemical evidence is especially important: lipid biomarkers and stable-isotope measurements from Incipient Jōmon pottery identify marine and freshwater organisms as the dominant detectable contents. Some compounds formed through extended heating, consistent with cooking rather than merely placing cold food in a container.
The evidence supports pottery-cooked aquatic food, but not a recoverable recipe. Fish or other aquatic organisms may have been simmered, concentrated or processed for their oils; mixtures and repeated uses are also possible. Calling every deposit “fish soup” would go beyond the data because residue methods often identify broad food categories rather than individual species, seasoning or consistency. Plants were certainly gathered and eaten, yet large surveys find surprisingly little chemical evidence that the earliest pots were routinely devoted to nuts or other plant foods.
Pottery use expanded after the beginning of the Holocene, around 11,500 years ago. Research covering more than 800 vessels from dozens of Japanese sites found continued emphasis on aquatic products, now including a broader range of fish and shellfish. Vessel production, forms and volumes also became more diverse. Archaeologists reasonably associate this change with intensified fishing, longer occupation of favored places and declining mobility, but proposals that the earliest pots were prestige objects used at seasonal gatherings remain interpretations rather than direct observations.
The transformation was therefore gradual: rare, specialized vessels preceded pottery’s more routine household role. Later Jōmon communities used ceramics alongside grinding stones, storage facilities and increasingly elaborate plant-processing systems. Ceramic containers ultimately supported boiling, stewing, serving and storage on a far greater scale, but storage is not directly demonstrated for the earliest vessels discussed here. Modern earthenware pots apply the same physical advantage—controlled wet cooking over heat—without proving an unbroken lineage from an Incipient Jōmon recipe.
Historical context
Japan was passing from the final millennia of the Pleistocene into the Holocene. Sea level remained below its modern position, coastlines differed substantially, and climatic warming after about 11,700 years ago encouraged the expansion of broadleaf forests and altered access to coastal resources. Incipient Jōmon groups were hunter-gatherer-fishers rather than agricultural villagers, and pottery was initially uncommon relative to stone tools. Farther west, ceramic vessels had already appeared at sites such as Xianrendong Cave in southern China by approximately 20,000 years ago, showing that pottery was an East Asian forager innovation long before farming became established in either China or Japan.

Geographic attribution
StrongRelevant pottery and residue evidence comes from sites across the Japanese archipelago, including Ōdai Yamamoto I in northern Honshū and Torihama in western Japan; one central-Japan coordinate cannot represent the complete distribution.
Historical interpretation
