Mopane worms

Mopane worms are not worms but the caterpillars of an emperor moth commonly identified as Gonimbrasia belina, also treated in scientific literature under the genus Imbrasia. They occur across parts of southern Africa and are especially associated with mopane woodland, named for the tree Colophospermum mopane. The larvae also feed on some other plants. Their use as food belongs to long-established regional knowledge, but there is no secure evidence that the dish originated in 1866 or at one identifiable place.

Harvesting follows the moth’s seasonal life cycle, often producing one or two collection periods where rainfall and vegetation permit. Collectors remove mature caterpillars from trees by hand. The gut contents are usually expelled by squeezing or pinching the larva, although exact methods differ. The cleaned caterpillars may be boiled in salted water, roasted, or cooked in their own released moisture. Drying in the sun or near smoke reduces weight and slows spoilage, transforming a short-lived flush of insects into food that can be stored and traded for months.

Dried mopane caterpillars can be eaten as a crisp snack, but they are also soaked and simmered until tender. A widespread contemporary preparation fries or stews them with onion, tomato, oil, salt, and sometimes garlic or chile, producing a savory accompaniment to sadza, pap, or another stiff maize porridge. That sauced form reflects ingredients and cooking fats now common in southern African kitchens; it should not automatically be projected back onto earlier harvesting traditions. Simpler boiling, roasting, and drying are more defensible historical methods.

The caterpillars are nutritionally dense when dried, with substantial protein and fat as well as iron and zinc, although reported composition varies sharply with moisture, larval development, location, processing, and analytical method. They have also been economically important. Rural collectors—frequently women and children in documented modern supply chains—sell sacks to traders who move them into towns and across the borders of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and neighboring markets. Thus, a seasonal woodland food can become both household provision and cash income.

Mopane worms remain culturally valued rather than merely an emergency substitute for meat. Their future nevertheless depends on ecological management. Premature or intensive collection can leave too few larvae to reproduce, while woodland clearance, pesticides, drought, and changing rainfall can disrupt harvests. Community harvesting rules, protected woodland, and small-scale rearing have all been proposed or attempted as responses. The modern dish therefore connects everyday cooking to a broader food system in which insect biology, forest stewardship, preservation, gendered labor, and cross-border commerce are inseparable.

Historical context

The territory now called Botswana was occupied by several Tswana polities and other communities rather than governed as a modern nation-state; the British Bechuanaland Protectorate would not be declared until 1885. Cattle, sorghum, millet, gathered plants, game, and seasonal insects formed parts of regional food systems, while maize was becoming increasingly important in southern Africa. European colonial expansion, settler farming, firearms, and long-distance commodity trade were reshaping the subcontinent. The modern city of Gaborone did not yet exist as today’s national capital, and dried caterpillars could travel farther than fresh ones without mechanical refrigeration.
