Finished examples are often around 37.5–45 percent alcohol by volume, although historical household spirits were less standardized. A small glass may be offered after a meal, during a visit, or at a village celebration. Contemporary Alpine distillers range from small farm operations to specialist firms producing named-fruit bottlings. Modern competitions emphasize varietal aroma and technical purity, continuing an older principle: the best clear spirit should taste and smell recognizably of the fruit from which it was made.
