Historical context
Van Diemen’s Land was a small British penal colony whose non-Indigenous population numbered only in the low tens of thousands and included a large convict population. Hobart was a young port connected to Britain and other colonies by voyages lasting months. Grain farming was expanding, but harvests, transport and imported equipment remained unreliable.
