Chang’aa is a Kenyan distilled alcoholic drink associated especially with small-scale, informal production. Under colonial and postcolonial systems, African-made alcoholic drinks were frequently restricted while licensed and taxed beverages circulated through formal commerce. Chang’aa nevertheless supplied an inexpensive drink and supported networks of grain suppliers, distillers, vendors, and drinking places. Production and sale often provided income in settlements where formal employment was scarce, including for women working as brewers or vendors. Prohibition also exposed participants to raids, confiscation, fines, bribery, and other forms of vulnerability.
The greatest danger is not an inherent property of a properly produced grain distillate but the uncertainty surrounding unregulated manufacture and sale. Modern products therefore range from informal, locally variable spirits to branded commercial versions. Historical context
