Feni is a family of Goan distilled spirits rather than a single fixed recipe. Its best-known form is made from cashew apples, the fleshy, aromatic structures beneath cashew nuts. Coconut feni begins instead with sap tapped from coconut flower stalks. Cashew feni has received Indian geographical-indication protection, a distinction that should not automatically be extended to every coconut spirit sold as feni.
The drink’s significance lies in adaptation rather than simple importation. A Brazilian tree moved through Portuguese imperial networks, but Goan growers and distillers created the regional food practice that gave its fragile apple lasting value. Modern feni preserves that link between orchard, fermentation, and small-batch distillation, even as regulation, branded bottling, tourism, and cocktail culture reshape how it is produced and encountered. Like all strong spirits, it also presents substantial health and social risks when consumed heavily.

Historical context
Goa was the headquarters of the Portuguese Estado da Índia and a major node in maritime routes linking western India with East Africa, the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Brazil. Ships moved crops as well as silver, textiles, spices, and people across oceanic distances. The cashew, native to tropical America, was among the plants established in India through these networks. Distillation was already known across parts of Eurasia and South Asia, but the surviving evidence does not identify a precise year when Goans first applied it to fermented cashew-apple juice.
