Raksi is a distilled alcoholic drink made in Nepal, commonly from millet or rice but also from other fermentable materials according to region and household practice. The name describes a broad family of spirits rather than one standardized recipe. Its documented social presence is clearer than its origin date: raksi has long served as a drink of hospitality, ritual exchange, celebration, and everyday sociability among Newar, Gurung, Tamang, Rai, Limbu, and other communities, but available historical knowledge does not securely identify an inventor or a first year of production.

Preparation begins by cooking or steaming grain so that its starch can become accessible during fermentation. After cooling, the grain is mixed with a traditional starter, often called marcha or murcha. Such starters may contain molds, yeasts, and bacteria maintained through local specialist knowledge. Their microorganisms help break down starch and ferment the resulting sugars. The inoculated grain is then kept warm for several days or longer, producing an alcoholic mash whose composition varies with starter, cereal, temperature, and fermentation time.

The fermented material is distilled in a simple apparatus. In household forms, a heated lower pot holds the mash, an upper vessel supplies a cool condensing surface, and distilled liquid is directed into a receiver. This arrangement concentrates ethanol and volatile aromas without requiring an industrial column still. Distillers judge the run through experience, although claims that every traditional producer separated precisely defined “heads,” “hearts,” and “tails” should be treated cautiously. Strength can vary substantially, particularly in unregulated production.

Raksi may be poured in small cups for guests or presented during festivals, weddings, funerary observances, and offerings. Its role is not uniform across Nepal: communities differ over who makes it, who serves it, when it is appropriate, and whether ritual alcohol is obligatory or discouraged. Distilling also turns bulky, perishable fermented grain into a concentrated product, but it consumes fuel and diverts edible cereal. Heavy consumption carries familiar risks of injury, dependence, and chronic disease, while poorly controlled equipment or adulteration can create additional hazards.

The card’s year 1700 is best understood as a conservative placement, not a documented moment of invention. Distillation knowledge circulated widely across Asia before that date, yet the route by which particular Nepali apparatus and practices developed remains insufficiently established. Today raksi continues in household and ceremonial settings alongside licensed commercial products. Standardized bottling, taxation, public-health regulation, and tourism have changed how some raksi is sold, but the drink’s strongest continuity lies in fermentation knowledge, skilled domestic distillation, and the obligations of hospitality surrounding the cup.

Historical context

The Kathmandu Valley was divided among the Malla kingdoms of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur, whose dense towns stood amid intensively cultivated rice fields and participated in trade linking the Gangetic plains with Tibet. Nepal had not yet been unified under the Shah monarchy. Distillation was already known across much of Eurasia, but surviving evidence does not show that raksi itself began in 1700; household techniques in the Himalayan region may have older, locally varied histories.
