Darjeeling tea is tea grown and manufactured in the Himalayan foothills around Darjeeling, today in West Bengal, India. Its emergence was part of a British colonial effort to establish tea production outside China. After Darjeeling was transferred from the kingdom of Sikkim to British control in 1835, the hill station’s superintendent, Archibald Campbell, conducted experimental plantings during the 1840s. Commercial gardens appeared during the following decade. The card’s date of 1850 should therefore be read as an approximate marker of emergence, not a single moment of invention.
Early cultivation relied substantially on Chinese tea plants and on knowledge transferred from Chinese tea production, although Darjeeling gardens later developed varied plantings and local practices. The cool, elevated environment slows leaf growth and helps produce highly aromatic harvests. Workers generally pluck a bud with one or two young leaves. For classic black Darjeeling, factories spread the leaf to wither, roll or twist it to rupture cells, allow controlled oxidation, and then apply heat to halt oxidation and reduce moisture. The dried tea is sorted into grades before tasting, blending, packing, and sale.
Darjeeling’s seasonal harvests are commonly divided into flushes. First flush, gathered in spring, is usually lightly oxidized and prized for a bright, floral character. Second flush, harvested in early summer, can develop the fruitlike aroma described in the trade as muscatel, although not every lot displays it. Monsoon teas are generally stronger and less prized, while autumnal teas tend to be fuller and rounder. These descriptions are trade conventions rather than guarantees: cultivar, elevation, weather, plucking, and factory decisions all affect the cup.
Tea was brewed for both local consumption and export, but Darjeeling’s fame was created chiefly through imperial transport, auction, and marketing networks. Behind the luxury image stood plantation labor. Many workers were recruited from Nepal and neighboring Himalayan communities, and women became central to field plucking. Low wages, dependence on garden housing, inherited employment patterns, and disputes over land and benefits remain important parts of the industry’s history. Celebrating the tea without this labor history would reproduce the selective romance of colonial advertising.
Today, the protected Darjeeling name is intended for tea cultivated and processed within the defined district, distinguishing it from blends or imitations that merely invoke a style. Black tea remains its best-known form, but gardens also manufacture green, white, and partially oxidized teas. Modern brewing recommendations—brief infusion in water below a full rolling boil, often without milk—favor aroma rather than the stronger preparation historically common in much British tea drinking. Climate variability, market competition, counterfeit labeling, and labor insecurity now threaten the landscape that made the name valuable.

Historical context
Darjeeling was a recently established British hill station on territory formerly controlled by Sikkim, while most of India remained under East India Company rule. Britain’s enormous demand for tea had long depended on Chinese production, but colonial officials were rapidly expanding plantations in Assam and testing Chinese plants and manufacturing knowledge elsewhere in India. Mountain roads linked Darjeeling imperfectly to the Bengal plains; the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway would not open until 1881. Plantation growth coincided with migration from Nepal and the conversion of forested slopes into commercial estates. Steamships, expanding ports, and metropolitan tea auctions were shrinking transport times and integrating remote gardens into an industrial global market.
