Georgian tea is an infusion made from Camellia sinensis cultivated in the humid subtropical districts bordering the eastern Black Sea. The resulting tea was sorted and transported as a shelf-stable commodity. Green tea required heating early in production to limit oxidation, followed by shaping and drying. Exact methods varied among estates and later factories. Consumers infused the finished leaves in hot water; additions such as sugar or lemon belonged to broader regional tea-drinking customs rather than being necessary components of Georgian tea itself.
The crop mattered because it joined agriculture, industrial processing, and a vast imperial—and later Soviet—consumer market. Under Soviet administration, plantations expanded greatly in Adjara, Guria, and neighboring western Georgian districts. Mechanization and production targets increased output, but coarse mechanical harvesting and an emphasis on quantity could lower quality. Georgian tea nevertheless became an everyday product distributed across the Soviet Union, reducing dependence on tea imported from farther abroad.
The dissolution of the USSR shattered that protected market. Factories closed, plantations became overgrown, and production contracted severely. Since then, smaller Georgian enterprises have rehabilitated limited areas, often emphasizing hand plucking, careful processing, and black, green, white, or experimental specialty teas. Modern Georgian tea is therefore not an unchanged survival from 1893. It is a revived industry shaped successively by Chinese technical transfer, imperial investment, Soviet mass production, post-Soviet collapse, and contemporary interest in distinctive regional products.

Historical context
Georgia formed part of the Russian Empire, while railways and Black Sea shipping were drawing the Caucasus more tightly into imperial commodity markets.
