Cottonseed oil became an industrial food when manufacturers learned to turn the seed left by cotton ginning into a marketable fat. Commercial oil milling developed in the nineteenth-century United States, with ventures reported in the 1830s, although 1834 should be treated as a representative early milestone rather than an uncontested date of invention. Crude cottonseed oil is dark and contains free fatty acids, pigments, odors and variable amounts of gossypol, a naturally occurring cotton compound with toxic and reproductive effects. Its rise as food consequently depended on industrial refining rather than a household recipe. Degumming, alkali neutralization, bleaching and deodorization produced a pale, relatively neutral oil. Professionally refined edible oil should not be confused with crude or homemade cottonseed extract.
By the later nineteenth century, refined cottonseed oil entered compound lard, margarine, salad oil and commercial frying. It was also used to adulterate more expensive fats, sometimes without honest labeling. Hydrogenation subsequently allowed manufacturers to make solid vegetable shortening; the introduction of Crisco in 1911, initially made largely from hydrogenated cottonseed oil, made this transformation especially visible in American kitchens. Cottonseed oil thus helped shift cooking fat from a locally recognizable animal or plant product toward a standardized industrial ingredient.
Its history cannot be separated from cotton agriculture. Early American milling grew within a plantation economy whose raw material was produced substantially by enslaved labor, and later cotton regimes in other regions carried their own labor and environmental costs. Production eventually became important in India, Pakistan, China, Central Asia, Egypt and other cotton-growing areas, but that spread does not establish Uzbekistan as the oil’s single historical origin. Cottonseed oil remains a frying and processed-food fat, though soybean, palm, sunflower and canola oils have displaced it in many markets. Its enduring significance lies in demonstrating how refining technology could convert an agricultural by-product into an almost invisible component of the industrial diet.

Historical context
Mechanized textile production was driving enormous demand for raw cotton across the Atlantic economy. The United States had roughly 15 million inhabitants, including more than two million enslaved people, and cotton from the slaveholding South supplied British and northern American mills. Steam power, improved metal machinery and expanding canals and railways were reducing transport and processing costs. Cotton gins separated fiber efficiently but left growing mountains of seed, creating both a disposal problem and an opportunity for industrial oil milling.
