Claims about a universally high smoke point require qualification. Refined groundnut oil tolerates substantially higher frying temperatures than many unrefined versions, whose residual compounds begin to smoke sooner. The press cake was not necessarily waste; where handled safely, it could be eaten, made into food products, or fed to animals.
In nineteenth-century West Africa, expanding demand transformed the groundnut from a locally consumed crop into a major commodity. Farmers supplied coastal trading networks, and imported machinery later supported larger oil mills. This commerce generated income but also tied producing regions to colonial markets, fluctuating prices, transport corridors, and pressure for export-oriented cultivation. In India and China, groundnuts likewise joined older traditions of oilseed pressing rather than simply replacing one established oil everywhere.
Modern groundnut oil ranges from aromatic, roasted specialty oils to highly refined frying oil. Solvent extraction and industrial refining now recover more oil and improve consistency, though they distance production from household pressing. Because peanuts are major allergens, unrefined oil may retain allergenic proteins; highly refined oil generally contains far less protein, but labeling and medical guidance vary. Today’s product thus preserves an older principle—releasing fat from crushed seed—within a global system of mechanized oilseed agriculture, refining, and trade.
