Palusami is a Samoan parcel of taro leaves and rich coconut cream, traditionally cooked with the moist, sustained heat of an earth oven. Its precise date of origin is not documented, and the assigned year 1800 should be treated as an approximate historical placement rather than a recorded invention. The dish nevertheless rests on much older Oceanic foundations: taro and coconut were among the crops transported and cultivated by the Austronesian-speaking settlers whose descendants established Polynesian food systems.

Palusami is commonly associated with the toʻonaʻi, the substantial Samoan Sunday meal, and with gatherings where an umu prepares several foods at once. The parcel format efficiently contains coconut cream while allowing many portions to share the same oven. Related leaf-and-coconut preparations occur elsewhere in Polynesia, including Tongan dishes generally known as lū, but similarity does not establish that one named dish directly descended from another.
