Alsace Riesling begins with a documentary milestone, not a securely dated invention. Riesling was already named in the Rhine region during the fifteenth century, and a 1477 reference is commonly associated with its early presence in Alsace. The essential food product is fermented grape juice. Alsace offered conditions in which Riesling later flourished. Today, producers generally press carefully, settle or clarify the must, manage fermentation temperatures, and mature the wine in stainless steel or old, neutral wooden vats. These are modern controls, not a fifteenth-century recipe. Most Alsace Riesling is still and dry or near-dry, but late-harvest and sweet examples are also made. Its historical significance lies less in a single origin moment than in the long formation of a regional identity: one grape, repeatedly replanted and reinterpreted, became a durable expression of Alsatian agriculture, commerce, and culture.

Historical context

Alsace belonged to the politically fragmented Holy Roman Empire, and Strasbourg was a prosperous free imperial city on major Upper Rhine trade routes. Wine, grain, timber, salt, and manufactured goods moved by river and overland between Swiss, German, Burgundian, and Low Countries markets. Vineyards had long occupied favorable slopes and supplied both local consumption and commerce. Printing was expanding rapidly after the mid-fifteenth-century innovations associated with nearby Mainz, while European Atlantic expansion had not yet transformed diets through American crops.
